Rosco are you the sort of person that would use a lift even though there was a warning sign on it......because it might not happen to you?
Is it not better to be for warned and yes maybe air on the side of caution.

Nope, I'd take the stairs in most cases as a matter of principle anyway!   Big Smile

I basically just take issue with worrying about issues that are, in practical purposes, extremely unlikely to happen. It seems to stem from public hysteria fed by sensationalistic journalism, which creates an unfounded fear when analysed statistically.

If you read this book about Innumeracy,
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Innumerac...cy-Its-Consequences/dp/0809058405
it indicates some of this principle, where due to a general lack of understanding of maths, the majority of people are flumoxed by concepts such as  interest rates, statistics and estimation and make incorrect decisions as a a result.

Yes, you could be abducted and placed in the boot of someone's car, but how often has that actually happened?  How much more likely are you to be killed in a car crash? Or to have an accident in the home? Surely it is far more useful to be aware and prepare for these likely events rather than the highly improbable?

Many, many unpleasant things could happen to anyone, but I really don't think that life's about being aware and prepared for them all, do you?

(And this ignores the quite obvious American slant in the original article, such that it has even less application to us in the UK anyway, as in many/most of these supposed 'warnings' that get circulated.)

But surely people can be made aware and prepare for any event, even the ones that dont happen that often!

Its impossible to be prepared for every event life throws at you, however the more information you receive can surley only be a good thing.
How many time have you heard people say....but it doesn't happen to people like me?
