| Pubs are now almost solely the haunt of those with a large disposable income mostly the young who still live at home with there parents as beer prices are so expensive in them compared to what you pay for booze in supermarkets. |

A popular pub nowadays is gauged on whether it has cheap lager and Sky tv and not on the quality of the beer or company. _________________

There is a new law thats going to be inforced, banning happy hours and give away booze. This will affect shops as well as pubs as buy one get one free's will be banned as well. This is to kerb the binge drinking culture (supposedly)
As for best pub in Calne ...... hmnnnn...... (i'd have to say calne area) and go for Waggon and horses at beckhampton.
Most of the pubs IN calne seem to be either dirty or full of kids wanting a fight. |

Wagon and hores is a nice pub but if you go there you would have to drive.

The Waggon and Horses food is great - every time I've eaten there it's been spot on!
apart from that, the Talbot used to have good nights, although I haven't been for a while. London Road used to be on and off but sometimes that was good too:) |

Well in my day the most popular pubs was firstly the Green Dragon. There was a seperate room with a Bar Billiard table in and we used to drink scrumpy for 10p (old money) a pint. Half a crown brought 2 pints and a bag of chips in the Church Street chippy. Sadly like a lot of pubs the Green Draggon no longer exsists being converted to a house many years ago. We were all around 15 when we started drinking there!
The next pub to become our hang out was the Jenny Wren. This was the home of the original Calne North Star FC back in the late 60's. Apart from the fact most of us lived at that end of town and we practised on the playing field by the North Star Club, the main reason for its success was the landlords daughters! June and Heather Alexander I am sure that we all wanted their affection.
Pubs have like society had to change and are no longer in general the warm friendly place to go, at least not in my recent experience. Shame but there you are. |

I drive past the Waggon and Horses most days, and have always wondered what it's like.
With your recommendation, I think we'll try and get a meal there.
