I reckon 18 months of National service would do this country the world of good. All people aged 18 should be enlisted for National service to learn something vocational whilst living in a military style environment (a la' 1950's). _________________

Don't know to be honest, the enforced discipline is one thing certainly, but aren't there certain people (adults as well as youths) that would make you feel rather 'nervous' if they had access to army weapons?! |

i understand your reservations Rosco but as I understand it weapons are not that hard to come by in some areas of the country. |

I think it is a great idea.
It can install a sense of discipline in some areas of youth where they do not undersatnd what it means.
It can install a sense of respect (see above).
It can install a sense of national pride (as above)
It can install a sense of maturity (as above)
It can give inspiration, motivation and a positive outlook on life as something worth living for.
I wish i had the opportunity to do it when i was younger......... Alas i went to the Scouts and ATC instead. |

i would not want it.its forcing someone to do something what they may or may not want to do.
good idea for kids who break the law but not for every one. |

I think thats half the problem though, we as adults need to make our kids do things, it's called discipline and without it, the kids of today are running riot and doing just about anything they want.
Because they have never been told what respect is and do not understand the concept........ the kids who are running around the town centre smashing it ...... are the ones who have never been taught discipline or respect .......... national service would install this !!.
I have a german friend who is 18 ..... he just finished his national service ........ and loved every second of it..... made a whole load of friends...... got paid for doing it (working).... it is a part of growing up there (as in many european countries) and you hardly ever see the kids going mad over there ...... they understand and are proud of who they are (Young adults) and do not want to be the IDIOTS of the town.... as they are here ! |

There are a lot of very cool, decent and intelligent and talented kids who you can meet on the streets of Calne. It's a great town to be a part of as a youth, as anyone who grew up here should know. It has its problems, as all places do, but it has a real village connectedness and a lot of proper people with drive, ambition and spark. I'd rather see the youth of this town, including my own kids, hanging out having a laugh with their mates than getting shot to bits in some far flung country so that a few billionaires can make record profits from their stocks, bonds and shares! _________________ Democracy is dead. |
