The biggest travesty with regards to your above comment is how the British Government has treated the Gurka regiments in their pay and pension details. One of the most toughest armies in the world which has given sterling service to this country and for what? A laughable remuneration package which leaves them just above the poverty line.

The immigration issue has been a bugbear of nations since time began. This country was built on immigration and integration which gave us a rich mix of different cultures which has rubbed off on us over the years. You only have to look at our language to see all the words of French, German and Indian origin.
Anyhow.............. getting back to the subject of the Lickhill by-election  _________________

I feel that there is a case for compulsary voting as there is in Australia. |
Compulsary voting, in my humble opinion, could have a negative affect on the so called bigger parties as I believe most people dont vote because they have no faith in any of those who are standing or believe that their vote will have no effect. Thus being forced to vote they are more likely to vote for one of the more radical parties as a protest. This is probably the reason why the ruling parties will never bring it in. |

There is an argument that promotes the idea that electors only turnout when they are dissatisfied with the way their council/goverment are doing a bad job. So it could be said that the majority of residents of Lickhill Ward are generally happy with the council.
I think it is more likely that they believe that it will make no difference to the standard of their lives whoever they vote for |

Robert Baggs is a decent local candidate but the party he stands for is not acceptable, perhaps he should stand as an independant. He might stand a better chance to be elected although he is tainted by his relationship with the BNP.! |
In reality 11% of the 27% of electors who bothered to vote voted for the BNP which works out to be less than 3% of those entitled to vote and I for one find that dissappointing as the other candidates were standing for parties tainted by sleaze and corruption at the highest level. The Lib Dems for example who party leader was a drunkard, the Tories whose antics over the years have not exactly enabled them to take the moral high ground. Now whilst I am sure the candidates are all decent local candidates it will always be the way the party is perceived nationally which will dictate the way in which the majority vote |

It is interesting to see how this arguement has moved on from the original question.
Bear I don't disagree with you, but what ever synopsis is correct I suspect we both would like to see more people get of there backsides and vote. When I hear individuals complaining about our politicians (local or national) I ask if they vote and more often than not the answer is no.
If you don't vote then you forfeit the right to complain. Its no good ranting against town councillors when only 35 out of 100 eligible vote turn out at elections!
The people get the politicians they deserve, they are, afterall, only a reflection of society at general. |

| I didn't vote because I forgot. I remembered at about 9pm, by which time it was raining and I was tired. |
