More great photos. Has anyone any idea what in the second photo was across the other side of the river from the factory. When I arrived in Calne it was a car park for the work force but there was obviously something else there before that.

Can anyone remember 'Polykits' over the little footbridge? It was a shack where a old guy sold models and kits. It was every boys dream to own the radio controlled spitfire.

the bridge over church street was a foot bridge for workers & goods moving from 1 site to the other.
the factory included most of what is the middle sainsburys carpark and the area now used as the market place and what is the somerfield carparks.
the slaughter house where the pigs were killed was on the sainsburys car park. the meat went acroos the bridge.

I worked in the factory for 2 summer holidays, they took on extra temp workers every summer which were bused from towns all around.
I spent time boiling eggs by the 100,s for the pork pies, slicing pig fat for sausages and even spent a day working in the slaughter house. in the slaughter house you had no breaks until all the pigs had been processed and that could take several hours.
it was good money as a 16 year old I earnt £11 a week with a little overtime and bonus.
my 1st proper job at Rawlings James & Phillips came with a salary of £4-10s (£4.50) at the age of 17.

How things have changed

I remember it well Martin. Nearly all the money I earned on my paper round was spent in that shop.
