If you had the power to choose would you have a 10 pin bowling alley or a cinema? Perhaps you would prefer an ice skating rink!

I wouldnt have a cinema as it wouldnt last long.with a lot of movies being copyied and you dont have to wait long for a movie on sky usally about 6 months.plus movies are readily available on the internet.
i would sooner wait for a movie to be out on sky as as it stands  for two adults and one child to see the movies plus pop corn you are talking over twenty quid.
out of the two i would have a ten pin bowling alley.
ice skating rink would be quite a good idea as you could extend that idea to include different stuff ice hockey team??great intrest for youngters there.

Ice-skating rinks are usually very expensive to maintain, I'm not sure that a town as small as Calne could afford to run one. A ten-pin bowling tends to be rather expensive to actually play very often, from my experience of towns with one (all larger than Calne too).

It'd probably be interesting to know what facilities people travel out of Calne most often to do, to see what would be more appreciated in Calne itself: I'd tend to discount a cinema as nowadays people seem to prefer a multi-screen complex with lots of choice as opposed to a single-screen one, although there is still some opportunity for one of those while there are no others nearby.

We need another childrens activity centre, like the one that was shut down on Porte marsh not to long ago (Jumping Jacks).

Peter, it would be a huge incentive for parents with young children to use the sports centre during the day, if a soft play centre were set up there (It wouldn't need to be huge) The parents of young children in Calne (including myself) go to Chippenham, devizes or Melksham to use these facilities and they are always heaving with people.
Even a small slide and a ball pool upstairs in the new (fantastic) social area would bring in the mums and youngsters by the dozen during the day !!.

Please take a look at Boomerang in Melksham or Coral Cove in Devizes for inspiration, it's a market that could be really tapped into from the point of the Leisure centre.

Thats a excelent idea chepfer the only thing i would say against it though is  to get  mums and people in there when the kids are at school it would have to compete with the likes of boomerang, coarl cove.#also the cost of that stuff is huge .if this is for the sports centre  rather than in a place for calne would the insurance cover it.
as with that sort of stuff it would be quite high.

if its ideas for the sports centre then how about...
a rock climbing wall

if they want to entice the people in the day how about..
mother and baby swim

one of the best things it could have down there is a play facility for young kids to stay when there parents take a bit of me time.
if a child is pre school they could go in the play sceme and the mother could take a swim, work out or a sauna (if you have one)

for evenings
aqua areobics
sport lessons
night swim(used to love swimming with just the lights of the pool)
ladies evenings(as many woman feel more aware of there body and dont like exercising in the gym or go in the pool )

activity days where the whole family can join in.

sorry if the place has what i have suggested i havnt managed to get down there quite yet to see what they do have

THAT, I would use.
Although, we have problems with the link center with climbing walls.
I am proficient and trained in SRT. The climbing wall in swindon say this is an irrelevant form of climbing, and insist we work in a roped off area. Which is stupid. A climber hang on the wall with his limbs. An SRT user is always on a taught rope. If the climber falls there is a shock load on the rope. It is extremely unlikely that an srt user will fall, as they will always be on a tight rope.
If the leisure center would be able to supply me with an anchor point in the celing or three, close to a wall, (with an easy way of connecting a rope, or the possibility of leaving one there) I know of several people who would use it. Especially on a Tuesday from 6pm till closing time, and especially in winter.

Black bridge is cold this time of year.

On a separate note.
Firefox has decided to use the US spell checker and not the English one. And it is starting to confuse me. It is saying that both center and centre are spelled wrong :?

I was a member of the old Sports Centre back in the early 90's and it was as much as a social evening as it was a sporting one. You could go for a swim or play an hours badminton and then go for a drink upstairs and watch some sport being played by others - it was a great innovation which I have not see in any other sports centre that I have been in. Great news that it is on track to making a full recovery.

I wouldn't have a ladies only night though because then you would have to have a mens only night to balance out this sexual segregation which is so out-dated. Roll eyes

Thanks for some really good feed back, many of the ideas have been discussed and some will be happening.
The problem with the creche/play area for children is OFSTED if you operate on a regular basis you have to comply with their regulations which could be onerous for us (and cost £££££'s)

On a more positive note the possibilty of a climbing wall  is strong and we are obtaining some costings to consider its viability.

Cinema, you could have an auditorium which would be a cinema for 2 or 3 nights per week, a venue for the Calne Players drama group, live music could also be an option. The building could be viable on that basis.
There is apparently a small 10 pin bowling alley in Melksham which must be viable so why not Calne?
I would expect them to be non profit making community companies if they were to be built!

There will be a ladies night at the leisure centre there is already a ladies swimming session. Speak to the centre and give the receiptionist your ideals or just email them via the web site.
After all the leisure centre belongs to its shareholders as a not for profit community company.

Great ideas Peter, In respect of the childrens play, Just a small slide and maybe a box of giant lego , would inevitabley bring in parents to the centre for a drink and use of the cafe.....

There really is nothing in Calne for this age group at the moment, that you can just pop along to have a drink and a chat and let the young kids socialise and play together, unless you join a group like the tots and dots ion the church hall, which is over subscribed anyway.
