I am to "blame" for the increase in the towns precept (tax) as I proposed the resolution to support Athena Leisure (or any other group) to the tune of £50,000 over 2 years.
Assuming 5,350 houses in Calne the cost per house per year is,
£50,000 divided by 5,350 = approx £9.50 or less than 80p per month per house.
I am sorry if you think that it is to much but I and a lot of Calne people don;t.
I would also like to point out to everyone that the directors are not paid a penny for their work and can only own 1 share just like everyone else. There are currrently 681 people who have supported us by buying a share, they are the ones who oen the business not the directors.
Anyone can buy a share for £10 and own a bit, just visit the centre or down load an application form from www.calneleisurecentre.co.uk
We are not a private business but a community one! :)

to have the center up and running is a good thing and no one can deny that.
i think it was how it was done what most people do not like. |

| I never used the sports center in all the years I lived there. Why should I pay for it? |

Options are exactly that. An option.
When I got bt broadband, I turned down the option to have the hub phone.
When I took my car for an mot, I turned down the option of having it cleaned.
When I last bought electrical goods. I turned down the option for extended warranty.
It is only an option if you can turn it down.
Pay my water bill. I will give you the option of having a cup of tea. . . . . . |

I can see both sides of the argument here. The point regarding why should Calne people pay for something they do not use is quite valid. But presumably us tax-payers could say that about any tax we pay. I am not too happy about my money being used for our membership of the EU nor am I happy to pay the NHS to treat foreign visitors.
I would much rather contribute for something I don't use if I knew it was benefitting my own community particularly when it is as a result of an initiative that developed as a result of a group of Calne people and after all it isn't going to break the bank.
On the other hand, if Calne Town Council are happy to support this venture to the tune of £50k I fail to see why it shouldn't stump up the cash to fly the Union flag. Why is it such a big deal? How often do you see American scenes on our TVs where there is a flag flying particularly on news items, for example? Quite regularly I think, together with the Stars and Stripes lapel badges the politicians wear. I am not particularly keen on the American Way but at least they have no qualms about patriotism. _________________ http://robertbaggs.blogspot.com/ |
