How long before someone is killed or seriously injured as a result of the dangerous nature of the Studley crossroads? If you are trying to pull out from either the Studley or Derry Hill roads onto the A4 you either have to wait for a good 5+ minutes for a suitable gap to appear in the traffic or you take a chance and pull out onto the main road. With the new housing going up in Derry Hill this situation is only set to get worse. There was plans at one stage to build a large roundabout on these crosswoads but nothing seemed to come of it?

The roundabout can never happen because they would have to knock down one of the corner houses.
traffic lights would be a very good idea there as more and more traffic is using those cross roads.
fortunatley there seems to only be minor shunts happening.
One of the main problems i find is if you are coming out of studley and turning left towards calne with the way of that turn you natually go slightly over the white line into on coming traffic.
another situation is if you come out of studley and want to go right towards chippenham and there is a car coming out of derryhill wanting to go left into calnewho would have right of way if the road was clear?
through the years there has been deaths on that road but not half as much as down by the lysley.although now they have adopted a 40 mph it does seem to have stopped it. |

There was plenty of room for a roundabout before this new housing went in. The roundabout would serve not only as an aid to the congestion but also slow the A4 traffic as well, it's nothing to see a car pushing 90+mph along that particular stretch of A4. _________________

Why wasnt the increase of traffic there considered before those houses went up.?
the problem with the round about is that they would have to also speed limet the road to the lowest mph on that road which would be 50mph.
traffic lights like they have in lacock would be a better system there . |

It will probably end up with traffic lights - but only after someone is killed. _________________

My Wifes gran had a near fatal accident there 7 yrs ago , she was in frenchay for a year.
The garden centre has been sold to Manor garden centres (theres a big one in swindon) with the land still being held by Mr Lansdown. I think the plans for the new centre had to incorrporate a new road system if the centre was to be remodeled as planned.
Her gran is fine now by the way, she's 90 but has never been able to walk properly since the accident.
Even a 40 mph zone would help from the soho to the lysley.

Unfortunately Local Lass the only thing that seems to have ben considered when building those houses has been, how much land can we use and how many houses can we squeeze onto it. Who were the faceless planners and what criteria to they use for allowing a planning application to go ahead. Does anybody know ? |

Just improving the signage would seem to be a reasonable easy/cheap step to take: it's not at all apparent that there's a junction there when go you towards Calne until you come right on it. Some big ones with a yellow fluorescent background and some slow-down strips painted in the road surely can't be that expensive/difficult to add?
Things such as altering the speed limit would take a while to get approved, and more radical changes (such as traffic lights or a roundabout) would probably adversely affect the traffic flow too much on that road having to stop and start up again, given that the junction is at the top of a hill. |
