Being 8 years old and at Dunstan School
They sent home all the children who had someone to come and collect them (as some of the roof got blown off), and those of us who didn't have anyone to collect us had to wait until school finished.
At the time I used to walk home with friends (before the world became a nasty place) and my parents would be home not long after I had got in.
So me and a couple of friends were sent on our way home on our own in howling gales with the advice of "walk down the middle of the road, then if anything falls off buildings or trees we should be out of the way"
I remember seeing fallen trees, power cables, roof tiles, chimneys and some bits of stray washing. _________________ aut viam inveniam aut faciam! |
