I have been playing with forums (both posting and creating) for a while. And I hope to be hosting one at my own home. The question is what? I wanted to make a general discussion forum. Anything goes type forum. Problem is that's to vague. What sort of forum would you like to see? Maybe one that does not exist, or is not done well, or not looked after. What sort of forum can I create, that will do well?

And I will not replace this forum as I think it is doing well. Have thought about muscling in on the wiltshire forum though.

you have to have a focus to it (caving, cars, calne etc) else its just a chat room.....

Pimpdriver is right you do need a focus.
Why not do a forum based on caving then when it is popular extend. Most discussion sections on any forum is a extension to the subject.

Also tke a look whats around and see where there is a gap in the forum world.
Take this one for example. There is not another forum for the people of calne. When calne.org closed its forum section a lot of people lost touch.Hopefully with this forum people will come together again.

That is why i ask.
What sort of forum do people want?
I have thought about doing a forum like this for chippenham. There is one, but I dont think it is well done, and I dont want to tread on toe's.
My original idea, was somewhere for my family and friends to talk. It has been like that for a year now, and is not used enough to warrant hosting it myself.

I'd agree with the previous comments, you need to try to cover an area that people are interested in talking about, rather than just general chat. If you can find something that has a wide appeal, it will help it take off and reach critical mass more easily - a family and friends one isn't likely to be able to do that.

I didn't realise that Chippenham had a forum already, perhaps you can post the link so I can check it out?

When you run a MFF (myfreeforum) based forum you can't just stick any old thing on it. All material posted has to be "suitable" for a public audience so that means no nudity, excessive swearing, rascism, religious intolerance etc.

We hope that Calnetalk will offer all the basic requirements of what a member wants - and if it doesn't please post a suggestion in the relevant section = http://calnetalk.myfreeforum.org/ftopic34-0.php

Whilst I am on the subject, Calnetalk will have a new shorter web address by the end of the week ( www.calnetalk.com - don't click on it yet because it isn't linked yet) which will enable us to create some business cards and posters to advertise this site and hopefully get a load more members. I will also be placing an advertisement in the Gazette & Herald (and any other local rags I can think of) in the next couple of weeks as well. Hopefully, in the next year or so, we can build a forum that will have something for everyone in the Calne area - plus a few of our more distant members.

I stumbled across calnetalk because we are going to move to Wiltshire and have to say I like the forum very much....but the title of the forum would not attract many visitors using the search engine unless interested in Calne first......if you want to start a debate forum then a generick title to attract a wider audience would be best imho...........eg with the word in the title, like debate or discussion etc. Big Smile

Calnetalk is registered with Google along with many other key words to get this forum to the front of the queue. As time goes by more and more key words will be plucked off this site by the google search engine. Google is only one way of advertising this site - which is why we shall be having business cards with the web address so that people can find us more easily.
