Looking at all the results being printed on the G & H website, early indications look like it has been a very good day for the Conservatives and not a bad day for the Liberal Democrats. Labour on the other hand has taken a hammering it would appear.
I don't wish to take anything away from Chuck's victory but do you think that people tend to vote for the political party rather than the individual candidate's personality or policy?

That is pretty well correct I had a mountain to climb in March 09 the Party lost Lickhill by almost 200 votes 477 to 282.
What helped me was the Party, my door knocking, Sophy standing and that's about it. Peter worked pretty hard and stood on the door at the polling station almost all of the day.
Of course there are winners and losers but I will need to work pretty hard to get the vote up - really more than 50% of the lectorate is the goal I am not sure anyone scored that in Wiltshire as the average turnout was about 40% so not even half turned up to vote.
Now I would like to set up a forum for Council questions maybe one for each Calne Councillor and possibly also forthe areas in the town do I have a taker for the moderation of that forum on here?
Then also can veryone in each area write to their representitive to ask they have a little spot each - woud be good I reckon.

That would be a great idea, Chuck. It would be a very simple thing to set up on here by having a separate section or sub-section in the Political Chamber for every councillor and their respective ward. Any question can then be directed at a particular ward of Calne to be answered by their local councillor. I'll PM you my telephone number so we can talk out the details if that's ok? _________________

The turn out in my area, Summerham and Seend, was 53.65% which is pretty good when compared to Westbury west - 27.08%.
edit: Lyneham has got the best turnout record that I have found so far with 59.1 per cent. _________________

a great idea but how practical it is will have to be established. the question is in real terms how many calne residents actually use calnetalk.com, are there any figures? _________________ A lifelong Calne supporter |

That's a fair comment, Peter. I do know that more than a few people do look in on us but don't have the inclination to register as a member for one reason or another. I expect that the people in the North of Calne learnt a lot more about the three candidates who stood the recent election by reading the Q & A's on here in the political chamber than they would have done by looking at a party manifesto leaflet or meeting with you on their doorstep. I feel, as does a few others, that having the likes of yourself, Chuck and Sophy on here sort of makes it a more personal experience when dealing with political matters. I know that having a sort of cyber surgery for councillors isn't the most practical thing in the world because not every one has an internet connection but what better way of getting to know your local councillor or candidate from the comfort of your own home?
Now that this forum is 2 years old we really should push for more widespread advertising so that everyone in the Calne area knows that we are here and what we are about. Some widespread advertising of the site is already under way but you will never succeed in having everyone here. _________________

| At present getting hold of a councillor is like finding snow in July at least wit the idea proposed everyone can chat to them and know where to find them.it could work providing admin and mods on this site and the councillors set it up right. |

sorry LL I again find myself disagreeing with you. it is not diffilcult getting hold of a town councillor. you just go on the town councils web site and all the councillors contact details are listed some include their adress, telephone number and email address. you have also got the option of leaving a message at bank house and at the extreme you can attend a full council meeting to collar them inperson. dates of council meetings are on the towns web site or available from bank house.
it is not diffilcult but you do have to look for them after all most of them try to hold down full time jobs as well as being a councillor!
there have been invitations to councillors to sign on but with out exceptions, as far as we know, none have. a good idea it may be but with out their co-operation its doomed to failure. how can we make them, of course we cannot. _________________ A lifelong Calne supporter |

It would be just one way to stay in touch!

Exactly right. It is just one of the ways that the local councillor can keep in touch with what's going on.
