My question would be: can you give me a straight yes or no answer.

Why do some politicians take the plunge and go for election? Is it a lust for power or do they genuinely feel that they are doing something for the community? I really couldn't stand the hassle and grief of being into politics when there is so many people ready to stab you in the back just to get a better foothold on the ladder of power.

I think to be fair to most politicians they go into it because they believe they can change things for the better unfortunately there is a saying which applies very well in this case. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Years ago people wanted to become a Prime Minister as an ambition - nowadays 99% of the population would, hand on heart, never want to be a PM because of the grief that you would get, not only at local and national level but at international level as well. :?

Spot on, Bear. There are a lot of genuinely hard working, honest, well motivated LOCAL councillors around. but money does talk and it really does take an iron man (or lady) to turn away funding for a desparately needed community facility (Creche, nursery, day centre, youth centre) from a large organisation in return for a concession that the large organisation requires.

I'm not saying that this has happened but you can see the general idea. Politics is about give and take to the mutual advantage of both parties. The council based party is NOT the individual councillor but the Community.

If it was the individual councillor who benefitted this would be a criminal matter and the appropriate steps taken immediately.

It does happen but not as frequently as one might be led to believe by the press (who are trying to sell you a newspaper or Part politicians who are out to grab your vote for themselves.)

They're all out there to sell you something. Just be careful you are buying what you think you are buying. Life is a Jungle with lots of predators as well as genuine, honest people.
