Talking of Harris's my first job after leaving school was in the Accounts Department and when I think about it now every desk had an ashtray and a grey/blue haze hung in the office, we used a machine called a comptometer to add up on which had a handle and numbered keys because this was before calculators or computers. There were no photo copiers or fax machines. I seemed to remember we had a telex machine which was the height of modern technology and a woman would spend all day pushing a tea urn around the offices dispensing tea and biscuits. I also remember with my first pay packet going to the Green Dragon a pub on the Green and having a pint of cider a ploughmans lunch plus a packet of 5 Woodbines and I beleive I got change from a half crown. Of course as I,m only 21 this was only a few years ago.

I expect at one time everybody knew somebody who worked in Harris'. It was not only a meat factory but supplied a social club, a silver band and a football team amongst other things.

getting fish and chips in news paper(wouldnt dream of that now)

going up the shop with lemonade bottles and getting 10 p.

buying black jacks for half a penny

every thursday night when top of the pops was on and we were all eager to know what number one was.

settling down to watch a-team,air wolf,wozel gummidge,the fraggles,black beauty,the waltons,

christmas when i used to hear my dad laughing from morecombe and wise and the two ronnies.

my brother putting a pint of maggots down my nightie

being posh if the car you had had electric windows.

people walking the strret with massive ghetto blasters on there shoulders.

the snow it seemed so much.

holidays to butlins

getting strawberry bon bons.

playing polo on the bikes and 40 40 in with the other street kid.

jumble sales there seemed so many of them then.

the devastation of zebrugga, hillsbrough and lockerbie.

Hey, those were the days Bear, when you could take a bird to the pub all night, treat her to a fish and chip supper on the way home and still have change out of half a crown!!! And yep, I'm still 21 too!!!

I haven't looked around Calne for a few years now, but here's some of my memories:

The little shop in Church Street opposite the church where we could get fags out of the machine with no questions asked. 10 for two bob, that's 10p to all you young whippersnappers!

The Strand flooded in 1960 or 1961

Getting a train from Calne to Chippenham to go Christmas shopping.

The George at top of Church Street where all the 16 to 18 year olds use to hang out

The Talbot in London road near Wessington Park, with a cosy lounge bar.

The fish & Chip shop in Church street

Harris's, yes me too, summer holiday job for four summers running, way back. My first year I was on £8 7s 6d a week. (£8.37p)

Woodlands - Harris's social club

The Town gardens before they wrecked it with a new road

Calne youth club up Anchor Road, top of the pops on Thursday evenings.

The allotments in the Pippin before that monstrous supermarket was built

Calne Cinema off Church Street in Mill Lane before the other supermarket. Didn't we wreck that place on the last night!!!

Collecting blackberries in the fields before Abberd Estate built.

The slaughter house in the Pippin where we used to watch pigs being slaughtered through the doors.

Wessex Wines shop on the corner of Oxford Road and Wood Street

Wilkinsons toy shop in Wood Street

Hanging out on the Strand and using the phones free by tapping out the numbers

The recreation ground in Anchor Road which used to have a swinging boat, a big slide, roundabout and swings.

Calne Carnival - Do they still have one?

Buckeridge's on Market Hill, when they sold groceries before the supermarkets were built.

Harris's butcher shop on Town Hill with the record shop next door

Blimey It's amazing how the memories come back!!

..

Dave what was the name of that shop opposite the Church in Church Street.
Cant remember the flood, before my time and I think they had closed the railway the sme year I arrived in Calne, 1965.
I also remember the George they were one of the first pubs you could get a heated Steak & Kidney pie done in one of those new fangled heaters. Landladies name was Lucy cant remember the landlords name but if I remember right he had a stroke and couldnt use one side.
Oh and can you remember the people who ran the Talbot I think they were all over 80 then.
Calne cinema, I can recall watching a film called Goal in there it was the official film of England winning the World Cup in 66 so must have been after that when did that cinema close.
I also recall that it was Ken Flynn who taught me to use the cradle to make a phone call, I still see Ken every now and then hes still in Calne

Your not thinking of Barnes the Hardware shop are you, Bear? It used to have a green frontage and sell absolutely everything.

Dont know what it was called but it was opposite the church steps, lower down than the Hardware shop.

Yes Lucy, that was it. She sold me all the booze for my 17th birthday party, what a night that was!

I remember she was an old girl. When we'd snuggle up in the lounge, her head would just appear over the bar and say "You cant do that here!"
