Yes Spooks, if you can call it a market, there is still only around 4 stalls that go there, so your ok if you want flowers, meat or bin bags Anything else and you need to go to Devizes where they have a good market. |

| I personally think sainsburys destroyed calne town center. The car park was donated by harris' to the town on the understanding that it would remain undeveloped and free for 99 years. Sainsburys come along, steal the carpark, gating it as well. and generally increase the traffic into the town center. It is nigh on impossible to get a parking space in calne now. And they are making the store larger? Where are the shoppers going to park? Personally, I think that sainsbury's should be demolished and moved to portemarsh. There is loads of room there for a huge store with loads of parking, and we wont have thier lorry's thundering down oxford road. |

| I take your point Clunk but I also think there needs to be a balance. If you moved Sainsburys then what few other stores we have would probably close for lck of trade. On the other hand if there is no where to park the same applies |

| Well when they built the bypass to remove traffic from the town center, they made things worse. Conditions of the bypass meant houses had to be built with it. So all these extra residents are all still coming into the town centre and creating more traffic problems. I read somewhere a while ago, that calne has 50 less parking spots then 10 years ago. Yet there are 150 more cars per day visiting the town center. |

i dont think you can give sainsburys all the blame.
calne has grown so much over the last ten years..
if you got reid of the other supermarkets then sainsburys would be good for the town.
the by pass was a good thing the bad thing was the traffic measures in the town center that is what caused a lot of the traffic problems. |

Firstly what has killed the market is the lack of space available to the traders. They have been given that pathetic area between Somerfield and the lower Sainsburys carpark which can only hold half a dozen stalls - and when I walk through it is normally Fruit and Veg, Plants, Meat and Fish, and the bit of everything stall, and they normally are packing up about 1ish. It could be better if they had a larger area to set up in - it would be nice if they put some stalls up outside the old Post Office there seem to be quite a bit of space there - they may even get some more trade.
Secondly the reason the Sainsburys car parks are so difficult to park in is because the majority of the cars parked there belong to the people who work in the town shops and businesses (especially the lower one) Since the council introduced the small parking charge in the car park at the back of Barclays the workers that parked there now park in the lower Sainsburys car park. Which has resulted in not many using the car park at the back of Barclays.
Also the people who do park in the Sainsburys car parks seemed to have missed their driving lessons on how to park. If I pop down during my lunch break to get some lunch I can usually spot about a dozen cars taking up 2 spaces _________________ aut viam inveniam aut faciam! |

Now with the extension being added to sainsburys it will make the parking even worse..they have even hired a pit bull of a traffic warden to patrol the carpark. |
