My youngest lad is 12, and if he's left to his own devices he will play all day on either PC, X-box or watch DVDs/tele. If I engage him and take him over the rec, he'll play cricket, catch, chase, tag, spear throwing (with long blades of grass) and all manner of things. He will even come on long walks and discover trees, birds, animal tracks, wild fruits and plants and all that kind of thing. These days are getting fewer I have left he'll be into this and I will soon lose his interest into girls, fashion, rebellion and all the other beautiful aspects of a healthy youthful development.
While obesity is on the increase in children, processed, junky foods become ever cheaper and proper foods get more expensive. There is more to engage kids with in Calne now than I can ever remember and a lot more funding around, yet I know kids who hang around Sainsbury waiting to get chased. They are bored mindless often. They need challenges in life to 'sharpen their teeth' upon. They have too many opportunities and too few real challenges, except for the ones which they aren't even aware of... _________________ Democracy is dead. |

I used to collect those reflectors - there were Tony the Tiger one's as well - and Spokey Dokeys in Rice Crispies - In fact my dad pulled my old bike out of the shed the other week and they were still on the wheels.
One thing I remember so well from the good old days - which I haven't seen for such a long time - is the trays of penny sweets (or half pennies before the did away with it) you used to see in newsagents, I remember if I was good all week, on the way home from school on friday I was given 20p andwe would go to Tiches to get my penny sweets. They would give you a little tub and you could go along and help yourself to what you wanted and then they would check it and take your money.
I suppose Health and Safety killed that idea, but I think it helped a lot of children with understanding money and counting. Nowadays most kids in the shop I see struggle to think about how much is in their hand and how much they want to buy - I have seen kids go up with a load of sweets and ask the cashier if the money they have covers the sweets they want to buy, most of the time they only have about £1 but are trying to buy about £3 worth of goodies - and mostly they are between 9-12 years old (after that they are trying to buy fags and booze) _________________ aut viam inveniam aut faciam! |
