Is there any point investing any more money in Calne until we have sorted the road infrastructure?
We are supposedly trying to attract people and business to Calne when in a short space of time businesses have opened and closed in quick succession along from LloydsTSB Bank (High Street maybe).

I know plenty of people that deliberately avoid the town because of the bottle neck. It makes absolutely no sense to me to have a bottle neck of traffic that purely annoys motorists and anyone else that happens along that way.
We currently have a pedestrianised area with almost NO shops on it, at least no outlets that remain viable for any length of time but yet traffic and potential customers that we just hack of by keeping them waiting in Calne at a stupid bottle neck. It makes the whole town look like a bit of a joke!
Thoughts?

Quite agree with what you have said Sticky. My personal opinion is that they should do away with the so called pedestrianised area and reopen the road as it once was.
As it stands at the minute, with that bottleneck it will only be a matter of time before a pedestrian gets run down, with the zebra crossing being poorly placed, if a van is parked next to it, it is almost impossible to see someone crossing until they step out in front of a vehicle. Seen a few near misses......

It is a 20 mph zone there, so cars shouldn't be going that fast anyway surely?

I'd be dead set against reopening the pedestrianised bit to traffic - you end up making no-go islands as well as increasing the pollution and traffic noise to residents. Society is moving towards a more greener way of life, why step backwards and add more road space in the town centre?

Why dont they make it so that cars come in at Curzon street and go out down near Somerfields, surely a road can be put in somewhere I know the river is there but surely something could be done, the other alternative maybe is to have a no left turn at the top of the pippin opposite the b p garage so that everyone has to use the by pass to leave Calne

rosco, ever been hit by a car doing 20mph? It doesn't have to be fast to get hurt. My point was the large cars and vans that obscure the view of the crossing, even at 10mph some little old lady is not going to get out of the way in time, nor see the oncomming traffic until she steps out.

I will differ with you on this, surely the pollution and traffic noise is worse when there are tailbacks? As for the pedestrianised bit, it's mainly a dumping ground for litter, and somewhere for the yobs to hang out. A no go island for the yobs, good idea.....obviously a sensible crossing would be put in place.
Angel, only one thing regarding the bypass, if it ran around the entire outer limits of calne, then maybe more people would use it. Saving fuel (and cutting polution), i will always travel the shortest (and usually the quickest) route, so from anchor road to the garage, it would be through town.

Living up by Trinity School since the council have "improved" the traffic flow by the Wheatsheaf i now do most of my weeks shop in Devizes as its quicker and easier (and cheaper mostly) to drive there to Morrisons or Lidl than try to get into Calne town center to shop. By the time ive used the so called bypass to get to Sainsburys i can easily be in Devizes. If I wanted to park this south side of town and walk up the hill I now have to pay for the privilage too unless I go to Somerfields, so thanks to the councils wonderful ideas I now shop out of town whereas I always did the weeks shop in town before.

Same here biggles,

We're south side and i have not been in sainburies since it was apparently extended 6 months ago.

We either walk to somerfield for minor groceries or drive to lidles in devizes (10 minute drive - no queues) and get our shopping at a 3rd of the price.

Plus if we come home bromham way we can get some goodies from the sandridge farm shop or styles butchers in bromham.

So the improvements made in the form of Curzon Street traffic control and charging for car parking are not just deterring possible out-of-town customers from coming into the Town to shop, but pushing Calne people to shops in other towns!  I hope Devizes are grateful for the increase in trade Big Grin

It's very true Harris.

I know other neighbours who are doing the same as well !

Everyone moans about the queue of cars every morning along oxford road but no one seems to mention the queue that every morning goes along london road, as far back as holy trinity school into the town centre !!.

And it all boils down to the town centre planning.

The traffic lights in the centre are the biggest hold up from this direction, do we really need two sets of lights (one opposite off licence and the other by town hall). It seems if you get though one set, then the other will always hold you up, why not just have one set by the town hall for pedestrians and cars.

Ohh bliss ....

We dont actually have a town centre do we? We have a road that is blocked to traffic that not even pedestrians use except at night to sit outside the kebab shop and throw rubbish (amongst other things) around!  Its a joke.

Living in the South side I also shop in Devizes, I also go to Lyneham and beyond by going through Compton Bassett any way of staying away from the Joke is good for me and many others!
