http://www.gazetteandherald.co.uk...e_battle_over_inheritance_tax.php

i heard this a few months back and was disgusted about it then to Evil Mind

two old sisters who have lived together for many year.
when one of them dies the other will inherit the whole house but they will have to pay the inheritance tax.
two woman could live together as wife and wife  and let it pass onn to there partner and there would be none to pay.

Death and taxes, two things you can not avoid.  These sisters have known about this since the 1970s.  Between them they have about £1 million worth of property.  Not like anyone's gonna starve from it!

They have written to every Chancellor before the big budget since 1976 to ask for concessions on inheritance tax. I would have thought that seeing as this government has bowed to pressure in allowing civil partnerships in un-natural partnerships they could have at least brought in some sort of legislation for the case of long term sibling co-habitation - it's not that uncommon.

I think that inheritance tax is an awful tax that robs the dead of yet more money. Inheritance tax used to be targeted at the rich man but is no more likely to hit the average bloke in the street with increased house prices and savings.

Well yes, you have a point.  Inheritance tax is quite a thing when you have little enough left behind as is, although increases in house prices  and savings means that many people are now richer than ever.

Same thing applies.  Perhaps the law needs changing to say that people who co-habit, whether straight, gay, lesbian, sibling or otherwise should be exempt as long as they register at the beginning of their cohabitation.  Not sure.

One thing GTB, I do take some offence at your suggestion that same sex couples are not natural.  I suppose some would say that long term relationships in any form are not natural, in fact I know people who believe this is the case.  I am not certain, but I know that of all the couples I have ever known, they are mainly either separated/divorced or detest one another.  Not all, I am aware of that, but enough to make me sceptical.

Same sex couplings are as natural, for them if not for you, as eating and breathing.

this makes me angry   . my grandfather brought the houses we live in now for £100 each (there are two, made into one) when he died my father had to pay Inheritance tax. Now when my father dies I WILL HAVE TO PAY AGAIN !
The reason it has not been passed to me before is because my ex would have tried to claim half (although he never worked and never brought anything into the houses he would have been able to claim!) Now im settled, but if my father passes them to me now he would have to live another 7 years or i would be hit harded!
Yes the value of the houses have gone up, but thats not my fault, we as a family have all worked hard all our lives and paid god only knows what in taxes, so why am i going to have to pay all over again??

It seems, Geddi that we both agree that inheritance tax is not that fair.

Where same sex couples are concerned, they cannot be classed as natural where "nature" is concerned. The reason we exist is for the male and female, of any species, to mate and produce offspring to create the next generation - same sex couples are unable to do this, unless Mrs. Harvey, my biology teacher at John Bentley gave me the wrong lesson on human reproduction. If two people of the same sex want to co-habit and spend their entire lives together as lovers, then that is fine by me but you cannot say it is 100% natural.

If you like, rather than hijack this thread, we could start a new topic in this section to discuss this issue further?

Go for it, Geddi.

kathy27, inheritance tax is a form of "redistribution of wealth" which could be looked at as a communist principle where everyone is equal. Unfortunately, not all people are equal, some work damn hard for their money whilst others sit back and are happy to live of benefits for their entire existance. Why should I, after paying taxes for all my working life have to pay even more tax on money and estate that has already had the tax taken out of it before it passes on to my children? If they want to hit the rich then stick the limit at something like £2m or something.
