I see that Fidel Castro has stepped aside as overall leader of Cuba. How long before they have a democratically elected government then?

Could be still quite a ways off, it's only his brother that is taking over, no sign of democracy that I can tell (or at least the sort where you can have more than one candidate! smiling ).

An interesting debate Democracy versus Communisim! A debate that ended in the late 90,s with the fall of the Russian empire, an empire that did not quite equal that of Rome, Britain's and others.

The principle of communisim is sound as an academic idea but as soon as you introduce people into the picture it falls to pieces.
The priciple of all people are equal but some are more equal than others will come into play.

I am not 100% convinced that Capitalisim is the true form of democracy either. As the strong will always trample on the weak. I cannot believe that a footballer no matter how good is worth £150,000 a week against a doctor, teacher, etc. Who provides the best value for society?

The must be a middle way, but I have yet to hear about it.

Yes I would have voting mandatory, with fines for those who don't or will not. The monies raised to be spent on the community where it was raised. A sort of no voting tax, it could be an acceptable option, any comments.

Capitalism has robbed the nations of the world of all their toil, culture, personality, character and zest and turned all these things into commodities.

There are changes going on which are designed to stifle any outcry against the capitalist regime which rule us.  Illegal wars, as WeAreSTFC  rightly says including the attack on Serbia and Kosovo which wrecked three economies and which were built on lies and excuse with more lies after the event, are ALL about  breaking down resistance to globalised capitalism.  Iraq, Afghanistan, Cuba, Venezuela, Serbia, Palestine and others are all about international capitalist markets and nothing whatever to do with brutal regimes and  WMDs.  If brutal regimes are a problem, why aren't UK and US troops invading Zimbabwe right now?  Zimbabwe is an ex British colony and a suspended member of the Commonwealth.  Zimbabwe has no vast oil reserves known which can upset the world markets, so not an urgent issue.

Capitalism is claimed to bring great wealth and eliminate poverty, yet the greatest poverty exists BECAUSE of capitalism.  There is evidence galore for this and it is rife.

Communism has rarely been truly tried and as soon as it has the least success, it is crushed most brutally.  Big oil and the leading lights of the capitalist system will not allow any alternative to exist.  It can not be, unless it is an abject failure.  Cuba has been ostracised for over 40 years because it has (to a large extent) been a roaring success.  Despite the world's most comprehensive, long term campaign of terrorism from the USA as well as the world's most enduring and comprehensive trade embargo in history, Cuba trains more doctors than any other country, has the world's best comprehensive education and health care system for any developing nation which is the envy even of most of the developed world, including UK, and leads the world in music tuition as well.  If the wide embargo and violent campaign against Cuba had not happened and Cuba under Castro had been allowed to develop, who knows what might have happened there?  Perhaps the world could have been shown a vital new way to live?  There is change needed in both attitude and lifestyles for all of us and an alternative future to look forward to.

I am Green, not for the hell of being Green, but because the are the ONLY party who are neither far left nor far right, but far sighted.
