Peter, you clarified your opinion at the beginning of January.

This is Wiltshire Fri 4 Jan 08, Peter Dolman wrote:
This is not a case of cost or being patrionic it is just a case of what is sensible. We do not have a history of flying the flag apart from special occassions and this is how, in my opinion, it should remain.

In February you tried to make us believe that you had no bias either way.

As I have previously stated I am not for or against flying the flag.

At no time have I expressed a bais either way in this debate, I am just defending individal councillors rights to vote as their concious dictates in any debate.

Now, in April, you are against it again.

The decision was not unanimous as I voted against it.

It is difficult to believe anything you say as you appear to have been less than candid about your position on this matter throughout this debate.

Could I make a proposal that instead of the Union Jack or even the flag of St. George we fly the Saltire in honour of all the exiled Scots living in this country who have put the Great into Britain

My father in laws flags (Union Jack & St.George's cross) have been flying for well over a decade and only come down to be replaced, so I don't see why the council has an issue with it.
Surely, out of respect for our servicemen and women that are ordered to fight abroad it wouldn't hurt to fly it? And to have it at half mast when the bodies of those unfortunate soldiers are returned?
The cost, isn't much of an issue if they can waste £26k on fencing, is it? (re:the bowl)Roll eyes
As my father in law said, he's proud to be British, shame some councilors aren't.

As an ex serviceman who served for UN/NATO/GB in Bosnia and NI I think it is disgraceful not just for the likes of the serviceman but for the public and tourists.  When I went to Canada on a 6 week training exercise there was a 4 hour trip from the airport to the exercise location and the amount of canadian flags I saw was incredible, it made me think about how proud the canadian public is and it gave me such a feel good factor.  I guess tourists/public may not feel like I did then, because as a country we are not a proud nation unless we are a global success in some sport tournament.

I'd noticed when I visited Canada the large number of flags that they have too, but my take on it is that they are less secure as a nation and feel that they have to fly the flag at every point imaginable just to remind themselves that they are Canadians.
I personally feel pleased to live in a country that doesn't see the need  to show the flag everywhere, but reserves it for special occasions.
