sometimes the old ways are the best ways, it was done by the drawing of lots.
it pure chance, no skill required what better way could there be? (a bit like standing for election)

It's a bit like a penalty shoot-out.

One of my last acts as a town councillor was to propose to use £50,000 to help save the leisure centre, this was in relation to the aborted Athena Leisure fiasco. I then asked the town council to revisit this resolution so that Calne Leisure Centre Ltd would have the same offer. This was agreed by all the town councillors in the summer of 2007. This was a one off and there is no subsidy in the 2009/10 Calne Town budget. The town council is supportive but not in financial terms any longer.

seems in this modern day a strange way of deciding the result, is it like drawing straws , what format does it take

surely could be decided a better way (ideas?) maybe best of three at darts or something skillful

LL if you are a shareholder you can attend the AGM on the 24th June, if you are not then you can download an application form or collect 1 from the reception desk. a share cost £10.00 and entitles you to attend AGM's and to vote.

the continued success of the leisure centre or any other community organisation is down to the support it gets from the public as a whole. so to answer your question I expect it to see out the 10 year lease which expires on the 31st August 2017. what will happen then is diffilcult to say but depends on the new unitary authority. they are conducting a review of all leisure provision in the county.

the history of the conservatives, in the last 5 years at north wilts, seems to indicate that they would like to get rid of them all. they were calling for closures in north wilts at least 2 years before Calne & Cricklade closed.

when I approached them (district council) initially about Calne they were rightly very reserved but when they realised we were a serious organisation they were delightly to wash their hands of the centre. they realised that they had picked up a hot potato but had no answer for the problem and succeed or fail they obviously felt they could make political capital out of it with minimal effort on their part.

I and countless others will not allow the centre to fail again, but it brings me back to a well used phrase "use it or lose it".

I will keep a close eye on that perceived view and let you know if that is the case - I hope Peter when you imply the Conservatives want to close the centre you have asked all Conservatives - you missed me and I am certainly not trying but maybe the others said they were or just maybe you did not ask them or perhaps do not know!

Who knows? I am unaware of any such plan or wish.

Kind regards,

Chuck

chuck before you were elected in 2007 many of your former colleagues on the district council were critical of the lib dem administration for giving North wilts leisure ltd large sums of additional cash to keep them solvent. I agreed with them. They called for the closure of sum or all of the centres, check out old minutes and I think that they will bare me out.
The old county council were known to want to off load leisure centres as they are a drain on councils, and they are. they had plans to close Pewsey.
There is going to be a county wide review of leisure facilities so keep you wits about you and make sure that Calne Leisure Centre (and Cricklade as you live there) get their fair share of any cash hand outs.

A week has passed and I have decided that I will not stand for election again.
I will get involved in local issues (local to the north of Calne) and will be chasing the town council again about the childrens playground at north end.

thank you to all those who have made the effort to vote for me in the past and all the words of support I have received since last Friday.
