Here's the Gazette and Herald's header for the news item on their website.

The Coservatives have won Calne North with victory for Chuck Berry. |
I think you'll be expected to play "My Ding-a-ling" later on, Chuck. _________________

Well done Chuck. Well done Peter, Well done Sophy.
We can still work together on issues which affect Calne, like the Traveller Sites. If you need help delivering Calne leaflets, please ask on here, I'm sure we will all help.
I can't believe it was 8 votes, but I think a 40% turnout is pretty good???
Cheers

Commiserations (not sure if thats spelt right) Peter. County Hall has lost out on at least two extremely capable and knowledgeable candidates with both you and Nancy losing your respective races. I hope Chuck and Christine will represent their wards as well as I know you two would have.
Bearing in mind Calne seats have been all but taken by the Conservatives (save Calne Central which was a lottery!) and that they all publicised heavily their involvement (?) in saving the leisure centre, perhaps they can now work as hard to ensure it receives a fair cut of the central leisure budget and can give Calne children (and presumably Cricklade as well) the same opportunities as the rest of Wiltshire with facilities and opportunities such as free swimming sessions.
I hope the results don't put you and Nancy off standing again at some point. My experience of both of you is that you are not afraid to stand up for what you believe is right and genuinely appear to be in it for the betterment of the town. What better reason can there be?
Thats it from me. Best i steer clear of politics. Not good for your health you know! |

can not see how they can promise that .i am confused with how much the council have control over the sports centre my understanding of it is that that closed and people got it back.i know the council donated money . |

LL the council did not donate money as such.
The district council gave £60,000 which was in the budget as a cost to decommission the leisure centre. So that money would have been spent one way or the other.
The district's area 5 committee was given money every year to spend on Calne are projects. Not all the money was spent every year and a pool of £83,000 had built up, I applied and received £75,000 for the leisure centre. This was used to buy the new gym equipment.
Other sums of money have been awarded, similar amounts have gone to Cricklade. But the monies Calne & Cricklade have received have only been a fraction Wootton Bassett, Chippenham, Corsham and Malmesbury have received. Yet all residents pay the same taxes, so Calne & Cricklade subsidise the other 4 centres.
Free swimming as promoted by the government is effectively subsided by the government through local councils. This means that private leisure centres not funded by councils will not be included unless there is an arrangement in place for them to be reimbursed.
One of my last acts as a town councillor was to propose to use £50,000 to help save the leisure centre, this was in relation to the aborted Athena Leisure fiasco. I then asked the town council to revisit this resolution so that Calne Leisure Centre Ltd would have the same offer. This was agreed by all the town councillors in the summer of 2007. This was a one off and there is no subsidy in the 2009/10 Calne Town budget. The town council is supportive but not in financial terms any longer. _________________ A lifelong Calne supporter |

on the drawing of lots Howard marshal won by 1 vote |
seems in this modern day a strange way of deciding the result, is it like drawing straws , what format does it take
surely could be decided a better way (ideas?) maybe best of three at darts or something skillful
