Calne needs more committment from its elected representative, we want more of the taxes we pay to be spent in the town on projects to benefit the community.
How about a cinema?
How can we do this, by challenging the candidates in the election to chose our new Unitary Council.
If they don't knock on your door send them an email or phone them. Contact details are on their leaflets (they are on mine). Make life uncomfortable for them. Find out exactly what they know about your area and how they can make it better. They should not always be reacting to you but coming up with ideas themselves.
Make the "politicians" work for you, remember there will be a general election next May/June (if not before), don't let them have a quiet life. That would include me if I am elected!

What about the one in Hilmarton it is showing Slum Dog! We could use a digital travelling cinema at say Bremhill maybe.
Cheers,

going back in years you would have to wait two maybe three years for a film to come out .so it was worth going to the cinema.
now adays with sky and the internet you have the films there with sky with in 6 months these are on box office at a small cost of around a fiver but for that you can have as many people to watch it as you wish, you can watch it in the comfort of your own home .
as for the internet you can watch films near anough instant if you really want i found the simpsons movie on the net for free two weeks before it came out here.
the cost for cinema is far to much it cost just under 20 quid for three with tickets and popcorn.
for a cinema to work in calne there would have to be a huge space and one of the major companys would have to own it ,to make it work, calne is not a big anough town for that,
cinemas on the whole are on the way out |

-how about a cinema??????
Please tell me you are not serious! That is just, well, words fail me for once!
I think that Calne needs more important things than a cinema. How many youths/kids/yobs/working folk/unemployed/pensioners to name but a few of the Calne population, would honestly use a cinema, or could afford it for that matter?
If it was subsidised in someway by taxes, I for one would not be happy about it.
Some of the local projects (and I use the term loosely) have wasted thousands of pounds unnecessarily. Example, The Bowl by the firestation. Great idea for the kids, had a lot of local support, including from my business. However, instead of using initiative and being thrifty and supporting local businesses (we offered our labour for free), tens of thousands were in my opinion totally wasted by giving tenders to the usual criminals. By my calculation, we could of saved the council more than 60% of what they wasted, but in their wisdom, they chose not to listen to people who actually live in the town. Trust politicians, don't think so.
As for making Calne a better place, kids need things to do especially the "misplaced" teenagers.
To attract new business to the town, perhaps lowering of local business rates would be a better start to things? |

Business rates are not set by the town council and they do not receive a penny from them so apart from employing local residents(and some don't even do that) and some supporting (like yours block) local causes they don't contribute that much. A bit controversial hope not.
The suggestion of a cinema may not be that off the wall. Mobile cinema.s come to Calne and go to Hilmarton & Goatacre but the screen size is limited. The new digital projectors are cheap and efficent and actually don't cost that much, I understand £15,000 to £20,000. will secure one for you. They are not that diffilcult to operate as they run a CD like you have at home.
The building could be multi purpose being a cinema on certain days but used as an auditorium on others. This would give the Calne Players a venue for their plays, it could be a venue for live bands, a comedy club etc etc. You just need to think outside the box and there are countless usages.
I also think that a bowling alley and a small restaurant could be built as a small complex. A prime site, in my opinion would be the triangular site owned (now) by the new Wiltshire Council by the roundabout on the bypass/Lyneham road.
This is an idea I have had since finishing the Leisure Centre, its a big one but surely would aid something to the town or am I just dreaming?
