i never realised that  did you grow up in calne? |
Nay Lass ! I lived in Calne briefly in 1981/2 about the time that Harris's shut down.
When my time as one of the travelling folk came to an end, I decided to settle in Calne. Partly because it was & still is a nice place to be & partly because it was the only place in the civilised portion of England where I could afford to buy a house.
The centre of Calne is very attractive, although it took a lot of time and arguing. The library is pretty good but I suspect it should have had an upper floor. The landscaping of the riverside area and the colourful hanging baskets make it very pleasant.
Both Marden Court (where I may well end up soon before assisting the daisies in the churchyard) and the Barclays bank development fit together very well.
I like the head, pig and sheep statues because they are NOT statue of the great & good who generally speaking were neither great or that good.
Compare today with the photos of when Harris's was there. The only redeeming feature was that it provided work. The junction of Church Street with the A4 looked appalling. (And it stank)
Calne has a lot going for it. Of course there is and always will be work to do to improve it. If you can stop the minority of immatures who cannot handle their drink from spoiling it for the majority of well adjusted 'NORMAL' folk then you're on to a real winner.
A small clue for you my twin sons went to Heddington School during our brief stay and I'm proud to say I am a grandad to 3 boys.
I LIKE CALNE.

I very much doubt it, Lass. All the answers I have given have been truthful, but I like being enigmatic and who else has 2 pages of welcome messages ? (Even if they are the result of my own verbosity.) |
