I remember buying a copy of Big Issue of a chap in Bath a few years back. His line of advertising wasn't the constant repetitive calling out of "Big Issue", no his way of advertising was to play down the importance of what he was selling by asking if "Anybody want to buy this crap". It was so funny to hear that he sometimes had a queue.
It does make me wonder though when I'm walking around Bath city centre and these sellers all seem to have dogs and a heavy smoking habit. I wonder where their priorities lay?

The Big Issue is sold by homeless and vulnerably housed people. In order to sell the magazine a potential vendor will need to prove they are homeless, by showing receipts from any hostels that they have been staying in or a letter of referral.
Once signed up vendors undergo a training session in which The Big Issue's services and the pitch system are explained in detail.
All vendors complete a training period and sign the vendor code of conduct. This is made up of the basic rules to which they must adhere whilst selling the magazine, including no begging, no drinking, no swearing and no harassment of the public. They are also informed that they need to declare their earnings to the Department of Social Security, and sign a statement to that effect.
You can download a copy of the code of conduct here: - http://www.bigissue.com/magazinesite/conduct.pdf
As I already said: Anyone who thinks it is easy should try it - All weathers, all conditions. No sales, no returns. The person selling are self employed. It is work. It is full time, full on hard work.
There are people who claim they are ill when they are 'depressed' and yet they are capable of all manner of types of work. There are people who claim they are ill when they are addicted to certain substances. There are people who are homeless (a rising number who are ex-armed forces) through no particular fault of their own who end up taking substances which mess them up, some who sell the Big Issue and some who do not.
Shall we take them all to the slaughter chambers to satisfy those who are unhappy with their presence and existence?
I think not. _________________ Democracy is dead. |
