Whilst in Calne today I was waiting by the old Buckeridges shop looking up at the High Street. I remembered that on the end of the row there used to be a butchers shop, then there was a record shop (where they would play the record before you bought it just so you knew that you really liked it), then there is Lloyd's bank, The jewellers (that's been there for quite a while now) then there was Jeary's the chemist.
Doesn't things change?? There is a debate going on at the moment in the Calne Needs section about a balance of shops but 25 years ago there really was a good balance. What went wrong??

I remember there being a younger guy who worked there, with ginger hair (i think) he was a wizard with bikes. Can anyone remember his name? _________________ To err is human, to arr is pirate. |

I used to get Pippa dolls from Wilkins......I used to think it was the best toy shop in the world!
My brother used to buy lots of jokes and tricks - I still remember my aunts ciggie blowing up after he put something in it!
We have lost so many shops - I remember the record shop, a vital part of my early teenage years.
Dixons was where I got my first bra! and Europa News which only disappeared a few years ago.... |

My mate big Jim from Church Street reminded me that the bike guy was also a electronics wiz too. Repaired TV's and stereos, and lived in Oxford Rd not far from the Bug & Spider. _________________ To err is human, to arr is pirate. |

Wow... I just remembered Wilkinsons toy shop. I used to love going there with my mum on a saturday morning.
I can rearly clearly remember walking out of there one day and going into the butchers that was next door (park houses?) and passing some punks with spikey pink hair. I must have been about 4 years old, I think it was the first time I ever saw punks and thought they were really cool.
Talking of Parkhouses butchers, the old chaps that worked in there were great, and always seemed really friendly, I loved the bulls head on the wall. Its a shame all these places have been destroyed by the faceless supermarkets we are forced to use now... nevermind.
