we just had the leaflet calne connection through the post and on the front of it there is a report on how the sport center.is going.
it makes me wonder just how much control does the council have over the running of the sports centre?

Local lass I am happy to give you the answer to your question although I have made the same statement before on this site.
Calne Leisure Centre Ltd run the Leisure Centre and have a 10 year lease from North Wilts District Council for the building and the car park. The lease states we have to operate as a Leisure Centre or the lease will end. A strait forward situation.
Calne Leisure Centre Ltd is owned by its shareholders. There are currently 694 shareholders. They all own 1 share as you cannot buy more than 1. They all have 1 vote as you are not allowed more than 1 vote. The share are not transferable so the limited company cannot be acquired by any group/person/company.
Calne Leisure Centre Ltd has 11 directors who set the policy on how the centre is to operate. The centre is run by a manager who reports to the chair of the directors. The centre manager is responsible for recruiting staff and the day to day operations.
The 11 directors are made up as follows:
7 are elected on an annual basis
1 represent the schools of Calne and villages (non elected)
1 represents the users of the Centre (non elected)
2 are nominated by Calne Town Council
Both Calne Town Council and North Wilts District Council are considered to be partners in the ongoing project being Calne Leisure Centre as major financial contributors. They have no imput into decisions by the board other than the 2 representative on the board. Both councils have been very supportive and there practical assistance has been as much value as their financial support.
There will be an extraordinary annual general meeting in June as promised. The 7 elected directors will be up for election (assuming all are willing to stand) and share holders if they wish can nominate alternatives.
If you want to have a vote collect a share application form from the leisure centre at any time, the cost will be £10.00. Every member of the family can have one, they make excellant presents.
I now hope that you are clear to how much influence Calne Town Council may have or havenot in the running of the Leisure Centre. |

Just a quick up date
The leisure centre now has over 400 members and we have sold over 800 Advance Booking Cards (ABC cards) which allows you to book a week in advance.
We are seeking quotes, as funds have been identified which we hope to obtain, for a lift to give full disabled acess to the social area.
We have funding for a climbing wall and quotes are being sought.
TV;s are to be installed in the social area, buisness suite and activity suite.
A comedy evening is being planned.
There will be a busy schedule of holiday activities available this summer.
The best way to find out whats happening is to visit the centre on a regular basis. We are always on the look out for new ideas, please let us knoow if you have one.
