It is sad but true that those of us who are a little long in the tooth mourn the passing of the traditional pub that we sample are first beer in. You occassionally come across one although I do not know of one in Calne which would fit that description I do know of one in Devizes. The British Lion, unless it has changed in the last few months is worth a visit if you happen to be over there.

I can certainly recomend the British Lion and the Southgate in Devizes because of its adherance to keeping good ale. It also sells the odd lager if that's your thing. _________________

Not sure about the best but the dirtiest pub i've been in was The wheatsheaf it was disgusting
The kings, where the post office used to be, seemed pleasent enough but the toilets are miles away from the bar, i'm glad i've not got a weak bladder :oops: |

have to admit i have never been in the wheatsheaf.
i went in the kings arms many years ago .
i dont think ytou can beat the jenny really these days for a pub. |

King's Arms has changed a lot since the new management took over last year, worth a look. |

i have heard the king arms is now good.
at one time it was quite a rough pub.
the george was known if you were underage and wanted a drink,kings arms was rough,
the jolly used to known for being down to earth. |

There isn't that many pubs in Calne when you compare it to Devizes.

I guess there is also the Lansdowne and the White hart in Calne.
Though your right there are not that many here in Calne, I guess they like a drink or 10 in Devizes ! |

i would never class them as pubs though they are hotels with bars . |
