I once walked in a field which had a few trees around the edges, none of which were oaks.  Bang in the middle of the field (I estimate it would be about 12 or so acres, perhaps more) I found acorns.  There were dozens of them scattered over about 20 yard area.  I tried to locate a nearby oak tree which could account for them, and could not.

Life is weird some days.

There's a pretty good chance that a Jay put those acorns where you found them. Jay's have been credited with spreading Oak trees all over the countryside. They normally bury their harvest and half the time forget where they put their stash - which then starts to germinate and grows a new tree.

That's my best theory anyway.

I have rarely seen jays around Calne, though I did think of this.  None were buried, which made me think again.  It may have been an especially dumb bird I suppose.  It can't only be humans who are smarter or dumber depending on which one.
GTB

Jays tend to favour woodland habitats but often have to fly over open fields and towns to reach these. It would have to be a bird doing this but a Jay is the only one that I can think of that collect acorns.

We have some great photos taken about 5 years ago of a field ...... and in that field are full size hay bales flying around in the air ..... not just a little off the groulnd but as high as you can see ........ it was some kind of invisible vortex making these bales spin up into the sky ........
