You mean making motorways toll roads? Many European countries do that: I don't think there has been a definite conclusion but there is a lot of opinion that yes, it does force traffic off the safer motorways onto less safe main roads.

M6 toll is proof it won't work. It was built to relieve congestion on M5 M6 interchange. But it hasn't.

If the Government did something daft like setting up toll roads on Britain's motorways there would be anarchy. Lorries would stop using the Motorway and instead use the main roads and a lot of people would quite rightly refuse to pay their road tax.
We already pay road tax, fuel duty (at around 66% I think), tax on our insurance policies to drive on the road and tax in the way of VAT on any repairs made to our vehicles. Aren't we paying enough tax to drive on our roads already??

What would the money it be used for ?
We have a privately financed toll road near here !.
The A419 between swindon and gloucester (the really nice, well made and maintained one) was made by a private company.
Every car that travels up it is charged a fix price to the government who pay for us to use it.
For me it's one of the best roads around to drive on and if i were gaurentee'd that the motorways were going to be upgraded to this standard ...... i could justify paying a toll to use them !

its one way to get people of the road - the poorest first. I am sure there are some people out there on min wage who drive which are already getting to the point where they would be better off money wise by staying home.
In some countries they have toll roads, but no road-tax. In this country we will have both....hence the M6 toll motorway already in operation while roadtax keeps going up.
Some people would choose to use the A roads if motorway tolls came in, thus shifting traffic from one place to another.

Yes, that is one example I was thinking of: it works out very expensive over there as well as a pain with so many stops for tolls.
