Some of you don't like banks.. Ho-hum. Fractional reserve banking is (or should be) illegal as it is fraudulent behaviour. It is also what all the major banks practice and how Northern Rock collapsed.
Racism is so inherrently dumb. I once chided a woman for saying that "all Mexicans..." (doesn't matter what was said, it wasn't complimentary). I told her that what she was saying was like saying "All stones are round!" The stupidity simply oozed out as she replied: "Well, they are!" It doesn't get much thicker folks.
I detest that horrible, sticky, smelly, foul stuff which ruins carpets, parties, atmospheres and upholstery and eats away at anyones day unfortunate enough to encounter the stuff. Not to mention the disease risks involved.
It's dog s*** of course! So easy to pick up and there are tons of bins around. It's just rife in Calne and is one of the most anti-social things anyone can imagine. I know of people who walk large dogs into town or onto the park to let their dogs crap. Some of these NEVER pick it up. Work out how much crap that is per annum! It's gross.
[I don't dislike dogs. I worked with dogs in a rescue centre for 3 months as a volunteer. I was bitten and all almost daily, yet I still don't dislike dogs. I dislike dog owners who are lazy and anti-social enough to allow their dogs to foul without lifting a finger to clean up after them. I was in Glastonbury recently and noticed there was none of the stuff to be seen. Then I noted signs which showed that the local council took a particularly dim view of fouled pavements and clearly set out a determined path to resolve the problem. Fines up to £1000 have been imposed and it seems to have done the trick. Perhaps we could do likewise here in Calne?]
Chelsea Tractors (4x4s). Obviously, there are places where they are required for accessing very tricky terrain. Wiltshire has very few of these places and Calne town centre is NOT the place, no matter what the weather there is no excuse for driving a huge brute of a car or pickup through the centre of Calne, or to use one to drop and collect children from school. None!
I'll add to this list as and when. I also enjoy a lot as well ... don't want to be all negative my first week here.

I agree that if you are not going to use them off road, then there is no need to have them.
But.
If you have one, and generally use it off road, and can only afford to run one car, then why can't you use it for the school run?
My mate uses his for school run. His kids enjoy it.
On an unrelated topic.
Ramblers.
Those annoying anorak wearing people who think that 4x4's should be kept off green lanes.
I was sat beside a greenlane with a few mate's in the above vehicle enjoying the view. The rangerover was out of sight of the main trackway. In the distance, we heard noises. A large group of people, all wearing the same anorak, laughing and joking, with the dogs running after each other barking non stop. for 40 minutes they were like this, so we piled into the range rover and fired up the big V8. We had to drive past these morons, who took great pleasure in stopping us to tell us we were not allowed up there. And even accused the O/S map we had of lying about it being a byway.
They then said about the noise the V8 was making while it was sat there idling.
I piped up, and said 'when did you realise we were the other side of the copse. '
'As soon as it started.'
'So you had no idea we were sat there for an hour listening to the racket you lot were making?'
'err......'
'We will make noise for about 5 minutes as we pass you, you have made all that noise in one spot for an hour.'
He made a sheepish face as we left.

Clunk - (great name)
You ask me what's wrong with using a 4x4 for a school run? I'd normally use words of one or two syllables, except I know from the way you write that you aint all stupid.
It was part of a survey (FoE I think) some years ago which discovered that over half of all parents who drove their kids to school did so because they were: "worried about the amount of traffic on the roads which endangered their kids."
What they also discovered was that the parents taking their kids to school by car made up about 60% of all traffic on the roads in the vicinity of the schools surveyed! Quite something really. A solution to a problem which is caused by the solution. I am certain there is a name for this phenomena, I just can't think of it.
Besides this, hasn't your friend heard of air quality? Climate change? CO2 footprint? Your friend has kids so I am guessing your friend would want the best for their future. With all the implications in mind about what burning fossil fuels does to both local air quality and the wider implications (even GW Bush has accepted that human CO2 emmissions are causing increased global temperatures with profound consequences), isn't this question just a tad silly?

Buying a 4x4 just for the school run is wrong. But if the 4x4 is the only family car and it is used for leisure or utilitarian, then what is the point of buying a second car for the school run?
I also drive my kids to school, and have no desire to stop doing so.
As for the carbon footprint, that range rover in the pic is converted to run on lpg. Mainly as 9mpg is cheaper in lpg than unleaded.

Fair answer Clunk, perhaps.. but can you please help me to understand why the need to drive to school at all?
Calne is a small town with no place very far from anywhere else within the town boundary. Walking to school is very good for kids, in all but the most inclement weathers it is good for the immune systems of the kids, it wakes them up a lot more than simply strolling into a parked car from home then from the car to the school.
(P.S. this is not a personal attack as all my kids were also driven to school, sometimes when school was literally a few dozen metres from their home, but this was not my own choice.)

OK thanks for that. My kids went to school out of town as well. I was not happy with that and let their mum know I was not. Not forever, but I did. It cost her ... blah blah, and I would remind her of her choice. She did, as a kind of excuse, work in the village for about 10 years so was going there anyway, but in this case, the chicken came first, so to speak so she worked where the kids attended school.
You know when I smoked I could find a million excuses for me to smoke. Whatever our personal habits, passtimes or whatever are unpopular with others, we always find 'reasons' or excuses for us doing them.
I trip myself up for doing the same even now and I kick myself up the backside and remind myself that ALL evils, as well as pleasures, have excuses behind them.

The state of Israel is a racist state.
A severe form of apartheid is practiced by the Israeli state.
If anyone wishes to dispute this, please do invite me to another string of debate.
