This has happened to a person we know!

Your 17 year old daughter has met up with a 53 year old recently estranged man (who is 13 years older than the girls mother) and has fallen pregnant within 6 weeks of their initial meeting. The man then splits up the relationship and goes back to his wife and pretends nothing has happened.

What would you do if you were the mother or father of this young lady??

Good question. Probably two things which first spring to mind.

1. Go round to his house and give him a good hiding (not PC I know but a fathers gut reaction)

2. Sit down and consider where I have gone wrong as a parent to have brought up a daughter not sensible enough to take precautions in this modern society when plenty are available.

I think the questions are many and varied, but if it were my daughter, I would imagine she would need a hell of a lot of support right now. Bashing the brains (if he actually has any) of the 53 year old would doubtless make a few people feel better but would not actually do anything positive for the situation.

I would wonder why my daughter was finding herself attracted to a man of 53 and do some soul searching while I am at it.

I would most certainly inform the man's wife, kids, neighbours, relatives, enemies, employers, bank manager and anyone else who would listen, what kind of man he was, unless by doing so I brought more unhappiness into my daughter's life.

While all this is going on and my daughter was making a decision about what she wanted to do, I would be quietly looping two thoughts in my head:
1. Vengeance is a dish best served cold (old Sicilian saying);
2. Nothing ever burns down by itself (song lyrics)!
