I've put strawberry plants in a hanging basket, I have also planted a blackcurrent and blackberry bushes.  I have planted two pear trees and a plum tree, so maybe not this year but next year I might get some extra fruit!

Still not done the raised beds, but in the space allocated for them we are growing:

sunflowers

sweetcorn

pumpkins

squash

And strawberries in a planter.

We've plated a couple of courgette plants during the week. I managed to get a large bag of well rotted manure which has been mixed with the soil - we then put the plants into this. I know these type of plants like plenty of manure but could you plant a courgette directly into well-rotted manure??  Martin?
Martin Peck

yes you can plant in well rotted manure but have a small area of soil to plant in first on top of the manure.Stops the young roots being scorched.

My son brought home from school some carrot seedlings, so I have planted them into toilet tubes for now - they are in my plasticy greenhouse thingy until they are bit bigger.

My mum in law gave me some tomato plants yesterday so they are in the plastic house for now as well......

I bought myself a rhubarb plant from whitehall at the weekend......I just have to work out where to stick it..........

I bought one of these giant gorilla tubs from CMA Buildbase the other day with a mind to use it to plant potatoes in. Well tonight I filled the thing up with two fertiliser bags of well rotted manure, mixed in a little soil and popped four chitted potatoes into it. I've done this in the past with a fair amount of success but I'm hoping the well rotted manure will pay dividends with a bounty crop of spuds.

I was given another courgette plant by my neighbour today so it looks like I will be ok for courgettes come the summer.

GTB, where do you get your manure from (or is it a trade secret???)

Cheers

I am getting this manure of a dung heap which is about 3 - 4 years old. This heap is in a field in a village near Devizes and is next door to where we are working at the moment. If you are after manure then I'm sure that a friendly farmer would be only too happy for you to bag up a bit from an old heap.

I have planted my tomato plants out into grow bags, carrots in toilet tubes out into a trough - I have two runner bean plants to put into something shortly....

I have loads of sunflower plants in little pots - I will have to put them into larger containers soon.

I bought 12 strawberry plants from lidls for £5.98  - good plants too; I have put them into troughs as well.

Lugging the bags of compost around the garden nearly killed me but its cheaper than going to the gym!

Jolou, just remember you cant eat the rubharb for the first year of growing ..it's poisonous !

As for me ...... I'm growing Bind weed, i just love those white flowers they produce lol.

Sorry ...... My allotments full of all sorts !

Not quite right its the leaves that contain oxalic acid that can cause arthritis if eaten in large quantities. During the war it was suggested rhubarb was eaten as a substitute for other vegetables ( yes rhubarb is a veg not a fruit) some people died. Its also a growth retardent so dont compost rhubarb leaves (or horse chestnut leaves) and only eat in small quantities.
Some people put manure on their rhubarb I put custard.

Crikey, is it a growth retardant to other plants or humans too ?
GTB

Doesn't spinach also have a large quantity of oxalic acid in them?
jolou39

Thanks for mentioning horse chestnuts - I have a few in pots in my back garden (Idaren't let them loose in the tiny garden I have!)

My first crop has just come up, it is radishes, but something has been eating them. Any idea what it could be, never had this problem before?
