anyone else hear this?

rumors

didn't hear that one but rumors spread like wild fires, suspect thats the same everywhere!
the plans i have seen has that area as a delivery area/car park for the proposed flats above the "new"shops.
with a recession a possibility i don't expect them to be built for a few years yet!
Local lass

i take it they are building houses next to the grounds at the bank?

rumors

the back of the shops from Trotmans down to the recycling bins will be developed at some stage by a private developer. The original plans had 10 shops with flats above but I understand the revised plans have reduced the shops to 5!
There was to be an inner court yard for deliveries and residential parking which I understood would possible include the area where Trotmans are.

It is likely that the district council will sell what is currently the market place for housing to help defray their portion of the cost of redeveloping Phelps Parade.

It does seem that the plans change on a regular basis so the position may have changed or be changed.

A certain private individual has bought all the land from the side of the Zion baptist chapel down to the area of land next to the recycling station.

This includes Lloyds car park and garden, millers garden, Trotmans and the land next to the bottom car park (everything that was cleared recently)

I have worked with an element of the plans for the upper section (old kwick save) and have seen the latest plans for the lower (much larger) section. It looks really good and should (if it's not changed again) really flow with the newer developments and the older buildings of the area.
It has a circular building reflectiong the library, along with other shops in a similar style of the shops to the ones along the river side.

You can view the designs at NWDC. Though they are not finalised by any means, they do give an idea of how it may look.

is there any link to the plans?

surley the banks car park belonged to the bank.

another concern would be the parking in calne if they do build a load of new shops which no one disputes that calne needs.two main carparks in the town belong to sainsburys.could sainburys turn around and stop people parking there unless using sainsburys?
Peter Dolman

a rumor

parking is the achilles heal of the redevelopment. there is no extra parking public parking in the plans (as far as I can see) and although there are less shops than first envisaged more people will come shopping in calne. if that is the case where are they going to park and where are all the extra workers going to park?

this is the question that has not been properly answered!

I am still a surporter of the redevelopment.
Local lass

who owns the bottom car park by doctors pond?is that somerfield?
Peter Dolman

rumors

I believe so, the market square is owned by the district council, the car park behind beach terrace is leased to sainsburys but owned by the district council.
I understand that the district council stopped sainsburys from introducing a time limt as they have done in their other 2 car parks.

When you think about it, Calne is already quite lcuky in comparison to other local towns for parking.....

3 x large sainsburies car parks (lease by NWDC)

2 x Somerfield car parks (each side of the river)

The market place (which could be utilised)

The large car park behind the barclays bank (never full)

For a small centre theres alot of spaces already and more may be created with the new developement (not many though).

Calne does have a need for spaces but is is also a town that is easily accesable for pedestrians from most areas of the town.

Lazyness makes most of us drive that 1/2 a mile to go and get the newspaper or one bag of shopping, or whatever it is..... Perhaps it's a good thing not to have excessive spaces.

I am completely in favour of new development........... as long as it is well thought out.

thats very true .but the whole idea of the new shops is to bring people to calne to shop.
where would they park?

there has to be  a balence in the planning side of things .
