Warning something fishy going on - don't go thereWent to the Dolphin fish and chip shop on Phelps Parade tonight got two small fish and one lot of chips to share with the hubby...got hom eat most of my chips then went to start on the fish.....urghhhh the smell was awful something certainly wasn't right..the hubbys fish was ok but mine had an awful off smell...took it back and told the girl behind the counter that it wasn't fit to eat as the smell suggested the fish was off, probably got defrosted and left out for too long.. she just stared at it and asked "whats wrong with it?" !!!!! duh!!... i requested another fish which i had to wait for a good 10 mins and then i requested a small bag of chips to go with it as a way of apology for the time to come back and the bad fish in the first place and the fact that i now didn't have many chips left to actually go with the new fish..she didn't want to do this at first but when we loudly stated that its only fair after all the fish was not fit to eat she begrudingly agreed. Drove back home opened up the fish and hey guess what??!! yes it stank to high heaven again..... i just ate the chips...so watch out the Dolphin are serving some dodgy fish at the moment

thats quite surprising as they are usaly pretty good .i belive that the owners also own the jenny wren fish and chip place.
off fish is a major health hazord .best thing you can do is freeze the off fish and contact enviroment of health.

Sorry yes i didn't mean the Phelps Parade Dolphin fish and chip shop but the Dolphin fish n chips next door to the Jenny Wren on Newcroft Road. We have had plenty of fish n chips there before and its been ok but this time to have two fish that smelt awful has really put me off going there again

I feel that posting something like this in open forum is dangerous. The Environmental Health Officer at your local council is the place to report any food problems not slagging off the place on a forum .
Any one can register and post, even a competitor trying to damage anothers business, and caution in permitting such posts is needed.
Unfortunately someone hiding behind a pseudonym can post what they please irrespective of how true or potentially defamatory it may be.

Very true Nick,
Though i guess most issues debated on here could be construed in that way !.
I have recently had a great meal from there and enjoyed the "Fish" i ordered.

although what you say is true nick.whats the problem in it?its someone telling them of there experience of a place to eat.in some ways its offereing a service.we had a takeaway thread on here and most of us reported what we had experienced many of us agreed with what the other had put .in that case it does one of two things one it may help someone from making the same mistake and two if the owners of the takeaway should ever see this it gives them a chance to see what there custombers feel .Thankfully calnetalk is not that pc and the only guide lines it has to adhere to is phb forums .giving it the chance to say exactley what we want.good or bad.
going back to the fish and chip shop .do they own tongs as well?
i used to hate that shop cos the batter was always naff but now the batter is lush and they have changed there chips.

As I stated anyone can register on a forum and malign someones business, even a competitor, and cause that business to lose trade and may leave the forum open to legal action.
Fair comment is fine but the opinions given can only be those of the poster and that should be made clear.
In this particular case the poster initially complained about the wrong shop!
A difficult path to tread but caution is advised surely.

it was also a statement which was corrected.as for legal action i cant see that happening as its some one opinion .they would have to prove that it didnt happen.
if some one came on this forum and said something like so and so is a pakiand deserves to be shot .or so and so is a child molester then the moderators and admin would get rid of it and then you could be up for legal action if the forum never does anything about it it.
but to say that they had a bad meal some where then no because as they offer a public service then surly the public could and can comment on it.
if you look i have put a bad review about wok express and and the mill house in chippenham and oddly anough other members has commented on it and some has felt the same .its a bit of information that you can think about when and if you decide to have your meal there.
The gazzette now does a meal review in there paper and they had to chop it as they dont do the star ratings now simply because its pc.

the fish & chip shop next to the jenny wren is my "local" and I have used it for many years under different owners but can honestly say I never had a bad meal from them.
i can only relate my experience, but judging from the number of people waiting to be served must have the same experience. its generally a good indication of a good product if that number of people keep going back.

i have never had a problem in there either with the current owners .few years back we did have a off fish cake but it was a one off.tome they have always done the best batter and the best chips if they have taken over the one in town in phelps parade thats good cos that used to be a right dive and the hygene in there was alfull.

That is a great chippy, Peter. The fish and chips there are hard to beat anywhere - certainly better than what Devizes can offer.
Nick,
The comments made by the previous posters on food matters are not much different to those made by a food critic - although a little bit less articulate. As long as any comments made are not libellous then it's fine. You'll no doubt have noticed that there is already quite a few reviews in the Places to Eat Out section of the forum which contains not only criticism but also praise and recommendation.

agreed but criticism has to be constructive, factual and honest. you also need to accept that even the best have off days so a return visit to confirm standards is always worth while.
the chinese in school road is an example. my 1st experience was poor my 2nd was extremely poor and I have never been back!
