UNION FLAGHello,Is there anymore news on the flying of the Union Flag. As an Englishman and servicemen of this country (20 years so far) I'd like to think even in this day and age of walking on egg shells to keep the PC do gooders quiet they would like to think of which country this actually is, it's GREAT BRITAIN and we should be able to fly our flag with pride and not worry who it offends. Call me old fashioned but, when in Rome and all that? I f we go to other countries around the world we have to do as they do, whilst I understand we live in a multi-cultural society (yeh right) why do we constantly bow down to this sort of harrassment from these people, so, if they don't like it.......... |

I think it's high time the Calne Town Council turned their efforts (and the taxes we pay) to something a little more substantial than whether a few feet of cloth hang from the roof from a pole or not! the time wasted so far is bad enough, to carry on and drag it out even further is an insult to the people of Calne. A vote was carried out and the decision was made.
While people squabble over this issue (as is there right) I fail to see why the issue can not be resolved simply by lobbying the mayor OUTSIDE of council time, as Roy Golding pointed out some months ago when he was presiding mayor - the Union Flag can be flown any time "..at the discretion of the mayor.." Or... if people want to see a Union Flag flying, why not erect their own. It needs no planning permission at all. DO it in your own garden, and stop insisting the local council waste still more money and time debating it at public expense! |

I couldn't make the discussion as I'm on night shift.
If, Geddi, you look at our flag as 'just a piece of cloth' then I think you should take yourself away for abit of a chat. Yes the council need to look at other matters but we shouldn't forget who we are and as for insulting the people of Calne, are you having a laugh mate? Everyone who feels strongly about this have their right as tax payers, like you iI would imagine, the council need to listen and not worry about the minoritys, whoever they are and how it will offend them. If it can be flown at any time why should the Mayor have the say on when that time is, what gives them that right?!!. I know that Americans can be abit 'in your face'but at least their proud of their nation and their flag, it flys high and proud off almost every building. i've got my own flag thank you and it flys high everyday GET THE FLAG UP AND KEEP IT UP I'M BRITISH AND BLOODY PROUD OF IT!!!!!!!!  :thumbl:

Chieftan: Well done you. You have your own flag and fly it. Good one. I also have a Union Flag and I will fly it as and when I please. Mine is faded, tattered and torn and has been flown by my family since VE day, and I am proud to own it.

And every schoolchild has to look at the flag and say the Pledge of Allegiance every day in class. |

I do apologise whole heartedly Geddi, you just sounded a little unpatriotic with your, 'lets talk about something else' attitude but I guess I can understand your wish to talk about something else. Again please accept my sincer apologese and Geddi,, you don't need to beg or grovel for my forgivness you are forgiven lol
