the town hall traffic lights to be "intelligent"

The traffic lights outside the library / town hall.

They are "dumb" lights, in that they don't have sensors on them or in the road, it appears.

When I go through at 0600 or 0630, they go to RED even though there is no-one at the crossing or no cars waiting at the side streets.

Who do I (we??) contact to ask if they will make them "intelligent" lights, with sensors (either cameras or sensors in the road), surely this would increase the traffic flow through town???

Also, link them to the lights outside Lloyds TSB / Peddlars, so you don't just get through the library / town hall set, then get stopped 100 yards further on........

Very very frustrating and quite simple to fix........

I think that they do have sensors in the road (you can certainly see the cut marks as you drive through), it's just how they program them. One advantage of them being default red on the main road is it makes cars lift off and start slowing down on the Hight street late at night/early in the morning, otherwise they'd be tempted to blast through.

The pedestrian lights will always be demand-driven for when people want to cross the road, so it doesn't seem to make sense to link them into the main lights.

they are dum traffic lights.if your coming out of church street and wantr to turn right and the person opperite you also wants to turn right.both lights on green so who has right of way?

If you are turning right, towards off licence and the car oppisite is turning right towards the old library then neither of you have right of way, i would just pull forward and drive to my exit on my right and the oposing driver should do the same, however if you are turning right and the car opposite is turning left so both of you are going for the same exit then you must give way to other car.

same exit then you must give way to other car.

but who has the right if you both have to give way.

Its a bit like the mini roundabout at thomases garage when all three vehicles are waiting to entre the roundabout, no one technicaly has right of way , in this instance i just go for it, someone has to take the lead.

technically you should go "offside to offside", not "nearside to nearside" s it is safer, but no-one ever does:

When turning right at crossroads where an oncoming vehicle is also turning right, there is a choice of two methods

   * turn right side to right side; keep the other vehicle on your right and turn behind it. This is generally the safer method as you have a clear view of any approaching traffic when completing your turn
   * left side to left side, turning in front of each other. This can block your view of oncoming vehicles, so take extra care. Cyclists and motorcyclists in particular may be hidden from your view. Road layout, markings or how the other vehicle is positioned can determine which course should be taken
