How many pubs have closed down in Calne over the last 25 years and name them!
GTB
| Peter Dolman wrote: | | How many pubs have closed down in Calne over the last 25 years and name them! |
The Jolly Miller is the only one that I can think of that has closed since 1983.
Peter Dolman
That's an easy one having only closed down in the last couple of years.
I remember one where were used to drink cider from a barrel on the bar. It cost 10p (old money) and for half a crown you would get fighting drunk and have change for chips from the chippie in Church Street.
So the Jolly Miller is 1, how many more can be remembered?
GTB
Would that be the Green Dragon (I think that was what it was called) on the Green?
There was a pub in Curzon Street called the Plume of Feathers but that has been closed for nigh on 40 years.
Local lass
chepfer you were right well done.
there was a pub on the high street what was knocked down for phelps parade but that was more than 25 years ago.
if pub includes club then you have the cons .
other than that you have stumped me.
Peter Dolman
Green Dragon, although I am not usre when it shut. Dennis Wood was the publican in my day (1966/7 onwards).
Plume of Feathers was even before my day.
There was another in Church Street and another in Wood Street.
GTB
I didn't know there was a pub in Church Street. :omg: Still, I suppose it is the oldest part of Calne.
Local lass
peter are you talking about the white house public house what was on wood street?
and the butchers arms in church street?
Peter Dolman
The betting shop on the corner of Phelps Parade was original a public house which was redeveloped when the parade was built. It had a chequed history becoming a "nightclub" and there were frequent fisticuffs.
The Butchers Arms in Church Street was another of Calnes pubs that had a reputation of being a "tough" town pub.
Its very likely that we shall lose at least 1 more over the next 12 months with all thats happening in the world, any thoughts on which one it's likely to be?
Local lass

| Peter Dolman wrote: | | How many pubs have closed down in Calne over the last 25 years and name them! |

How many towns are there in wiltshire?
GTB
There are 21 towns in Wiltshire.
How many pigs per week were slaughtered at Harris' during the year 1956? Try and google that one!!
Local lass
on average they slaughtered 1000 pigs aday so i would say 6 thoushand per week.
Local lass
was this correct?
Peter Dolman
some days they did not slaughter any pigs, it depended on the availability of pigs, transport and the season.
if you worked in the slaughter house you had no work breaks once the pigs were brought in and they were all processed.
i spent a day working in the slaughter house process during the summer of 1968. in those days Harris's employed student labour during the summer months. students were bused in from as far a field as Swindon, Cirencester and Bath.
