The George, Norton St. Philip

This is one of the best pub/restaurants I have been in. The pub itself is huge and steeped in history - it's one of the places where Judge Jeffries (the Hanging Judge) held his assizes courts after the monmouth rebellion, and more importantly the battle of Sedgemoor, Somerset in 1685 (the last battle on English soil). The pub itself is owned by Wadsworth brewery of Devizes so you will have the usual local ales such as 6X and I.P.A plus a few guest ales. The food, which was served to us in a very large room (there was several dining areas to choose from) was excellent. I had a pan fried pigeon breast served with a warm salad for a starter followed by a home made steak and onion pie for the main course. The sweet, something which I don't normally go in for nowadays, was a concoction of real honeycomb mixed with very good icecream. Utter bliss! The meal itself wasn't cheap - about £30 per head, not including drinks, but the quality of the food and the historical suuroundings made it a very enjoyable experience.
