Teacher sacked for telling kids that Santa doesn't exist! How's this for a modern consumerist story?
| Quote: |
A supply teacher who told pupils Santa Claus did not exist has been sacked.
Year Three children at Blackshaw Lane Primary School in Oldham, Greater Manchester, were left devastated by the news.
One parent said: "My son came home and said that his substitute teacher had told the class that Santa doesn't exist and it's your mum and dad that put out presents for them.
"Apparently, they were all talking about Christmas and being a bit rowdy. She just came straight out with it.
"He was nearly in tears - and so close to Christmas. I thought it was wrong.
"He was distraught about it. He's only seven years old and it's part of the magic of Christmas to him."
A spokeswoman for Oldham Council said headteacher Angela McCormick is preparing a letter of apology to parents.
She said the headteacher has complained to the agency which supplied the teacher and added that the teacher no longer works for the school. |
Will the School have a new curriculum detailing other mythological entities into their pupils education such as tooth fairies, elves and God??

Note that it was a supply teacher, so they weren't sacked and were probably just replaced by another supply teacher is all.

I suppose it's also on the same lines as a teacher telling a group of children at a Christian school that religion is nothing but a load of old hookum and that man invented god as an explanation for their own inadequacies?

Not true at all in my opinion - you'll find children can be quite aware of both, and Santa is only of interest for a month or two in the year.

Just as illusionary for most, though.

Getting back to the question ... should she have been sacked ?
No, i dont think so.
Did she lie to the children ?
Did she breach her contract ?
Did she mentally abuse or damage there minds ?
I think the answer is no to all of these, questions.
Everyone makes mistakes and it does state that the children were seven years old. I can honestly say i had learnt before this, from others kids, that he wasn't real !.
I think theres far worse crimes in society that deserve "Sacking" someone ......... Hmnnn Gordon Brown spring to mind for some reason.

Yes, maybe we should never have voted him in ............... Oh we didn't, did we ?
But I agree that this teacher, supply, agencey of whatever should not have got the sack.
I wonder if he/she would have some recourse under the 'whistleblowers charter' or has that not been enacted yet ?
