Right or wrong

Taken from sky news.

DNA profiles of innocent people will continue to be held for up to 12 years on a database used to fight crime, under Government plans.

Those cleared of serious crimes will still have DNA profiles held for years

The announcement is a compromise, in response to a ruling by the European Court last year which said holding details of people who had not broken the law was a violation of their human rights.

The man who took the Government to the European Court was Michael Marper, a 49-year-old from Sheffield.

His DNA was taken by police in 2001 when he was arrested and charged with harassing his partner. The case was later dropped after the couple settled their differences and got back together. The court in Strasbourg ruled in his favour last December.

Speaking exclusively to Sky News, Mr Marper said the policy of retaining the DNA of innocent people was wrong.

"It was an invasion of privacy, I was offended," he said.

"They'd taken my rights away and I wasn't going to let them do that.

So what do you all think right or wrong

If you have not broken the law what is the problem.
there have been several cases recently where murderers have been convicted many years after the crime was committed, is that right or wrong?

But why take it only from some people that happen to have been arrested? Either you take it from everyone or from only those that are convicted: the current situation seems to be wrong really.

why not have everyones DNA on file or at least allow people to give it freely?

I have no problem at all with the Police having my DNA profile - but because I have not been naughty they don't have it. As Peter said, if you have nothing to worry about then what's the problem?

People have been caught for a past crime not because they have given a DNA sample but because a close family member has given one - they are then traced using a family genetic link.

That is precisely the point I think!

If the people of Great Britain were made by law to give a DNA sample, and that all babies as soon as they were born were placed onto a national data base wouldn't we also have to make foreign visitors and immigrants do the same?
Peter Dolman

why not?
Local lass

i think there should be a dna register babies taken from birth and every person living here now and anyone who enters the country to live.
i dont agree that these people in the above story should be held on a criminal register .
