Protests

Has anyone done one?
do they work?

To me protests are pointless.

They do show that people care about an issue, so I don't think totally a waste of time.

What a random question.

How long is a piece of string?

If you protest about something (I presume a march or something) and it gets into the media, you can change things.........
Local lass

look at the people who have protested about the closer of some of the hospitals.why go out side  the hospital carrying signs .do they really think that the people who have that decision are going to turn around and say oh well better keep it open then.
there are better ways and more practical ways of getting your self heard.
as for the hospitals closing that will continue to happen untill the goverment put a stop to foriegners using the nhs.
Clunk

Define protest?
If protests are when you object to something then they don't work.

Does "foreigners" include the Welsh and Cornish? What about Midlanders. Or is it all non Calnites?

Is your next post going to start "I'm not racist but...." or "some of my friends are black..."
Local lass

pimp im on about the whole of the uk not just this area.
forieners are draining are nhs.and are goverment is letting them.
people from europe are now coming here to have there babys at the uks expense.
how can we afford to host the olypics when the nhs is so badley off.
we have a housing crisis yet the council make way for forieners .
if that makes be a racist saying that then i guess i am.

our goverment is more concerned about6 the needs of others,
whist the english in long term will suffer.

protests

Yes protests can work!

Example, the reopening of the leisure centre.

Protests do not have to be noisey or in the public eye. They generally involve someone or group of people getting off their backsides and doing something!

Just talking won't get anything done!
Local lass

protest to me sees a image of a group of people with banners .
the liesure centre i wouldnt say was a protest but was a excelent example of people getting of there arses and achiveing something and making people listen.the result speaks for its self.
if they had just done a petition and stood in a group out side the center could you honestly say that it would be open today.

protests

local lass you are, in my humble opinion, quite correct petitions are comforting but in general terms get you no where. people in general are lazy and by signing a petition they think that's good enough. well it isn't!

there was a petition before the current group became involved which was even sent to the prime minister. there was even a big group waving banners about and being photographed.

our protest was a quiet revolution, working behind the scenes but never the less still a protest.

what we proved at the leisure centre is that any group of people with enough drive and determination to see a project through can succeed.

if residents want something then its up to them to drive it forward, don't wait for someone else to do it as they won't bother either and you will end up with nothing.

our group are happy to offer help and advice should it be required.

Protest is not just good for making a noise or getting your point noticed.  Protest is an excellent way of retaining some peace of mind and sanity.   If you think you are to small to make a difference, spend the night with a mosquito.

Even if you are a minority of one, right is right.

Protest is essential and getting more so with each passing year.  Peter Dolman is bang on when he says that petitions are not about to change anything.  They will, but ONLY with a backup plan.

Remember the year 2000?  Recall the blockades outside oil refineries?  The government changed it's mind then!  500,000 people, well organised and strategically well placed brought this country to a standstill.

There are many issues we would be completely ignorant about, except for protesters who sometimes put there lives on hold and on the line top make a stand and make a point.

What would you come and protest about?  Your house being demolished without notice?  The local hospital closing?  The Wiltshire police force being privatised?  What?

All of the above are feasible and perhaps even likely within your lifetime.  Make a stance and be counted.

First they came for the communists, but I was not a communist so I said nothing.
Next they came for the trade unionists, but as I was not in a trade union, I said nothing.
After that they came for the Jews.  I was not a jew so I did not speak out.
When they came for me there was no one left to speak out.
