Are we facing a situation called 'Peak Oil' or is this a ploy to get us all to accept stupidly overinflated prices for oil and unreal profits for oil companies?

Hard to say really - there are so many factors involved in controlling petrol price at the pump that it is hard to tell if it is really availability or not that is altering prices. Certainly the developing countries use of oil has exploded recently, with less care taken on the environmental costs than here as they use it to fuel their growth.
