The smoking ban

When the smoking ban hits people will be standing outside of pubs .chucking the cigerettes on the floor.
Steve B

As an occasional smoker I have reservations to how it will be policed.
GTB

I hate the smell of cigarette smoke and look forward to the day it is banned in pubs.

From what i have seen it is going to be policed quite strongly to start off.if you get caught smoking in a public building then you you will be fined fifty quid and the owner will also get fined.
I really do not think though that this will improve pubs if anythink i would think it would hit pubs quite hard.
GTB

Pubs will find a temporary lull in trade as smokers get the hump over the ban but I think a lot more people will go into pubs because of cleaner air. Landlords cannot afford to let people continue to smoke in their pubs because they risk being fined £2500 for any offence.
daffy

 for me the smoking ban cannot come soon enough !although in my job i will still have to put up with second hand smoke ,residential homes are exempt ,so my resident will still be able to smoke in there room where i have to go into daily ,as "its there home " But its my place of work , Can i refuse go into that room and refuse to care for that resident ??? what about doctors or any perfesion that needs to go into some ones home who smokes , would they be able to refuse to carry out there work .
It really puts me off going in to pubs because of the smoke ,i for one will be going out more and enjoying the clean air !!
GTB

There will no doubt be some confusion over where and where not you can smoke and I'm sure there will be some smoking martyrs out there who will insist on lighting up in a banned area - I just hope they throw the book at them and fine them top whack and make an example of them to the rest of society! Why should I have to breathe in other peoples smoke when I go out?
Local lass

I see that the jenny has got prepared for the smoking ban by building a massive wooden gazebo in the garden. :?

With regards to the smoking ban and the reduction in peoples right of choice one can see both sides of the argument. On the one hand people should have the choice to enter a pub and not have to breath in cigarette smoke and arrive home at the end of the evening with their clothes smelling of cigarettes and on the other hand if people enjoy a cigarette with a pint, as I used to do before I stopped smoking, then why should they not be able to do so. The answer it strikes me would have been to strike a balance. For example if as in Calne ther are ten drinking establishments open to the public then five licences should be made available for those premises who wish to allow smoking and all of them should be made to state on the outside of the building wether they are smoking or non smoking thereby giving everyone the choice of which pub/club they use. What do you think?
daffy

that seems a fair solution bear !
i see on some of the bus shelters around chippenham it states the no smoking ban in them , its only a shelter its not compleatly enclosed ,i think that is going a little to far .
A good manered person wouldnt normaly light up next to somone in a bus shelter ,in my experience they stand outside.

The reasons why licences would not be made available is because this new legislation is due to health and safety at work and protecting peoples long term wellbeing. The people who work in pubs and clubs are the managers, bar staff, waiters, etc and their health would have to be protected in their employers health and safety policy which is now a legal requirement for business/employers. I have worked behind a bar at my local club whilst helping out at events of upto 200 people and although we had a strict regime of banning smoking at the bar you still ended up stinking of cigarette smoke from poeple in the main hall.

I have no objections as a non smoker for this unsociable habit to be kicked out of every pub and club in England.
Local lass

Gtb although i see where your coming from.my argument to that is you must have know people smoke in your club and have done for many years. yet you still chose to work there. :?
its like a land lord complaining of the drunks?
GTB

Cigarette smoke is a carcenogenic toxin and employees should not have to work in conditions where this smoke is. More people die each year due to passive smoking than exposure to asbestos, yet look at the furore over that issue. Even artex ceilings have to sometimes be anylised for asbestos before work can be granted on some buildings just so any microscopic particles doesn't escape into the atmosphere. The trouble is that cigarettes are a good taxable commodity whereas asbestos isn't - which one is the easiest to ban regardless of health? I think you have to be slightly insane to smoke in this day and age with all the knowledge that has been gained over the last few decades about it's fatal qualities. Smoking has to be along the same lines as sado masochism. Roll eyes
GB

Hi, yall Big Smile
The ban went really well in Ireland and its soooo nice to go shoping or out to eat and not have to breath the nastyness that I use to. And the sight of smokers in the rain has to be one of nicest around. But the MESS they make at doorways is frightfull  with bins provided why must most of them throw the butts on the floor is beyond me :?
GTB

Just shows what an unsocial habit it is then, GB. Perhaps the government isn't taxing it high enough?
GB

Local lass

How will they gain back the taxes they will lose on the ciggerettes.
With people smoking at a all time low most of the money paid for a pack of the ciggerettes go on taxes.
Just watch your poll tax rise
GTB

The Poll tax was abolished 17 years ago.
daffy

i see local lass has gone up in the ranks to lance corperal !
iam going on a night out on 7th july ,looking forward to not coming home and having a shower at 2am to get rid of the smell of smoke .
GTB

I will be looking forward to coming home from skittles next season and not smelling like an ashtray! Cool
daffy

 what makes me want to gag is when you see couples smoking and then they start snogging ,UUUGGH GROSS/
GTB

Their breath must stink because their clothes already do. :pukeright: :pukeleft:
daffy

i see you have now been promoted to lance colperal gtb.
the spewing men are good .
they probebly cant smell it on them selves
GTB

You will be promoted when you hit 50 posts, Daffy.

That's the thing with smokers, they don't realise that it makes you smell like an old ashtray. The funny ones are the people who drive with the window down in the vain hope of not smelling of smoke. Roll eyes Even chewing gum won't stop the stench. :?
Steve B

So true. Roll eyes
GB

The thing that annoyed me over here is that everywhere built little smoking shelters to cater to peoples addiction. And it wasnt just pubs, but offices, shops and all sorts of things  Let em freeze Evil Mind , they have made my life miserable enough at times.
Local lass

what would you prefere gb for them to be smoking in the streets?
The jenny wren has built a massive gazebo for the smokers it must fill 3 quarters of the garden but i would prefere them there than in the street.
Exile in Galway

I think it has worked over here.
(Apart from OH still pretending not to  )

The only downside is the state of the pavements.
daffy

Also i think more people will smoke in there own homes and cars ,what would the lungs of a smokers child look like .
Evil Mind
Local lass

The ban includes:

All pubs and clubs

All business premises including workshops, factories, shops and offices

Any enclosed public place, shopping malls, covered footbridges and some bus shelters

All public service vehicles such as buses and taxis

All work vehicles used by more than one person in the connection with their business or employment eg pool cars and work vans

Penalties

Managers of smokefree premises and vehicles will have legal responsibilities to prevent smoking and to ensure that no smoking signs are displayed as required by the new law.

Anyone caught smoking in a smokefree place will be given a fixed penalty notice of £50, discounted to £30 if paid in 15 days. If the matter goes to court you face a maximum fine of £200

Employers who fail to prevent smoking in a smokefree place will face a maximum fine of £2,500 at court

Businesses who fail to display no smoking signs will be given a fixed penalty notice of £200, reduced to £150 if paid in 15 days. If it goes to court the maximum fine is £1,000

Exemptions from the new law are:

Some bedrooms in hotels, B&Bs and members’ club

Care homes, hospices and prisons may designate either bedrooms or rooms for smoking

The same applies to residential mental health units but they will become smoke free on July 1 2008

Offshore installations such as oil rigs may designate rooms to be used only for smoking

Specialist tobacconist shops may allow people to sample cigars or pipe tobacco within the shop premises

Research and testing facilities may designate certain rooms for smoking

Kennet District Council has been given around £38,000 for two years from the Government to work on the smokefree legislation. The council has bought 3,000 stubbis, a fire retardant pouch for people to put cigarette ends and chewing gum in, to minimise litter problems.

These will be given out at roadshows and to all taxi drivers in Kennet. Roadshows are to be held at the following places from 10am and 2pm; Monday (July 2) Station Road, Tidworth, and Ludgershall Library; Tuesday (July 3) Pewsey Market and Bouverie Hall; Wednesday (July 4) Marlborough Market; Thursday (July 5) The Brittox, Devizes.

The ‘Big Cig’ will be on hand to give information and there is a competition to win hot air balloon rides in line with the theme of breathing fresh air.

In North Wiltshire, the district council was granted £65,000 by the Department of Health to assist with the implementation of the smokefree legislation. A number of workshops have been held for employers, giving advice and guidance. The council has also produced beer mats and posters for pubs and bars.

A Smokefree roadshow event was held in Chippenham last month, but the council has decided this is not the best way to communicate the no smoking message.

Locally the NHS runs stop smoking clinics and people wanting to give up smoking can also see advisors at their GP practice. To get help to give up smoking call the NHS smoking helpline on 0800 169 0169.
Local lass

well went to the football club last night and you should have seen the amount of fag butts out by the door.
the place smellt musky when you walked it as well
GTB

Just goes to show that people who smoke are nothing but litter bugs then doesn't it. Roll eyes Within a couple of weeks there will be the inevitable court cases where some smoker has been acting the martyr and refusing to stop smoking in a pub only to be hit with a £50 fine!
Local lass

i dont think the landlords would allow it because of the fine they face
daffy

 its the first time i have come back from a night out and not needed a shower because i have stunk of smoke.
went to Eleven club in chipp (first and last time ) there was more people out side than in side, it reminded me of our school discos where every body was out side sneeking a puff .
GTB

It's weird in pubs now. No longer is there the stench of acrid smoke just the aroma of beer.
Spooks

going a bit far i think,
ecc's

since the ban only one person has been fined for smoking in a public place!

that suprises me
Local lass

the one aspect of the ban i really do not like is the fag butts round the doors of places even though there is quite often a bucket for people to put there butts in to.
its a night mare when you are in a pub and you have to get rid of chewing gum with no ash tray to put it in
GTB

Now that this smoking ban has been in place for nearly a year, has it made much difference to your life?

Do you go out more now that you won't have to come back smelling of foul acrid smoke?

Do you point and laugh at the odd people who stand out side pubs with a cigarette  hanging out of their mouths?
