calne changing

 i lived in calne over 22 yrs ago ,back last year i went for a walk around all the old haunts i played in as a child , i was shocked to see how much calne has changed ,stokes croft where all the flats used to be ,the allotments have all been built on , i think that is now kings close or somthing like that. the corn field by st Edmands school ,houses are all over that .I have fond memories of that corn field!!!!
Local lass

calne has changed in many ways over the years and not all for the the better.
Steve B

i remember those corn fields which backed onto oldacres. We lived the other side of Calne but came up to them fields to see freinds.
daffy

steve did you ever go up oldacres before alot of the factories was built ?where they used to have big mounds of mud ,it was great going up there on bikes.
Bear

How far will Calne expand are we going to join the surrounding villages before long or what
Local lass

my guess would be in the next twenty years. the outer villages of calne ie derry hill and studley  nearly reach pewsham.
pimpdriver

ii don't think Calne will expand too much to the west. but if they build an eastern bypass/link to continue the current "ring road", houses will fill the void.

but i think they've learnt from the 'Nam  (Chippenham) that you need more facilities.

I wouldn't live in the 'Nam if you paid me!
Local lass

chippenham in my view is much worse than calne crime wise.
like all towns there are some good and some bad places.
although chippenham is a much bigger town than calne.
certainly has better facilitys.
daffy

i live in chippenham and i wouldnt feel safe walking about at night ,and yet when we go to Bath on a night out you feel safe ,you dont see loads of drunken youths trying to balance and eat there kabab while shouting out abuse.
A friend of mine was walking back from the chinnese about 500yrds from his house when 3 youths beat him up for  no reason and 1 of them was a girl and she was the one putting the boot in  being a gent he wouldnt hit a girl as you cant call her a lady !
Bear

Whilst I agree that you should not hit women and you should never throw the first punch this young female would appear to have renounce her gender by her behaviour and probably deserves a good hiding along with the males involved

I remember playing in the corn field (on the mound there) and also up on porte marsh before the rest of it had been built. We used to go up there and go ponding (yes porte marsh was .... A Marsh) there used to be loads of Newts, frogs and stuff up there.

I remember the massive mound behind (Marriettas' as it is now), that was just so great running up and usually been thrown back down again.....
Local lass

we used to live in cowslip grove and the ground there is clay it is alfull which was part of that mrsh.
daffy

i agree with you there bear ! i believe treat people how they treat you and if they start it you finnish it ,unless your out numbered and then you run like hell .
daffy

does anyone remember when coombs rubber factory went up in flames ? i can remember being out in our back garden in Warren cres when there was thick black smoke ,so we got on our bikes to see where it was coming from ,i cant remember what year that was early 80s at a guess ?
GTB

I think you may find that it was actually in the late 70's, Daffy.  I remember that fire as well.
