I have quite often heard them, I still (despite all the new housing) see a fox coming from the football ground direction going down Beaversbrook Lane.

At the golf club there are several owl boxes, at least 1 pair of Buzzards, far to many badgers, protected newts and rare orchids. It a common experience to see a barn owl out hunting, it a great experience just watching him/her at work.
There is much fauna and flora with in 5 miles of Calne, you just need to know where to look.

The owls you heard would probably have been Tawny owls. The male and female owls call to each other.

lol they move around a fair bit,  they have been around our neck of the town for weeks on and off.
As for the buzzards, we had 4 pairs catching the thermals above our house, and another 3 pairs nearby doing the same, which was nice to see. - they still havent taken any of my pigeons! i dunno, offer them a free lunch on a daily basis....fussy eaters lol

We lost a lot of pheasant poults to tawny owls this year. You have to be a bit imaginative with ways to discourage them from coming anywhere near to release pens. The old buzzards can be a nuisance as well.
