North Calne - Whats happened ?I was brought up on Hungerford road/Rochdale avenue, opposite tich's and had a wonderfull upbringing there. Sure there were the odd crazy families and all that but there was a great community feel and everyone pulled together.
I have been tending my allotment at lickhill quite a bit recently and have noticed so much stuff going on .....
Last night, we were fired at by kids with fireworks at the allotment.
3 nights ago a drunken kid jumped on the back of my car in lickhill road (and yes he was fine afterwards)
Gangs of kids roam the streets with beer, looking intimidating and violent.
I helped catch a thief a few months ago near the allotment
What else ..... the list goes on and on really ..
Are my perceptions reality or am i imagining things ..... this just doesnt seem to happen that much where i live and i find it quite bizzare, why the difference.
It's not like theres nothing to do either .. theres alot more than when i lived there !
So what is it ..... Parents dont give a darn ? - Lack of facilities ? - No law and order ? ...... Tell me, i want to know.

this is why people with cars drive everywhere.
The goverment putting the price of fuel up and road tax up, wont stop people driving - the thing is on the biased tv reporting, we only see one side (the "green" side) of the story. But for everyone one of those people, there are 10 or 100 that will drive to the other end of their town, rather than risk walking through a crime hot spot.
The "perception" issue is what we also saw when there were the anti war demo's in London. Sure there were a lot of people, but for each one of them there were many more that were for the war or didnt care either way.

I lived there i nthe eighties and really cant rmember it being that bad.....
Sure Colemans used to be bad but i'd walk through there quite happlit at night now - it's changed quite a bit in recent years for the better.
So what can we do to change it ..... what do we need to do ?!

I can never remember Calne being that bad in the 80"s ,
all our old haunts has now been built on ,the allotments at the back of Dixon way ,the corn field behind rochdale ave nr st Edmands school and we used to play up porte marsh before alot of the factories was there and there was loads of mud hills ,great on your bike.
The worst things we ever done was play knockadoor ginger ,not like the kids nowadays .

Well i can remember 80s being bad if not worse. I dont care about Daffy being good little kid. Because 99% are fine today, its only that 1% that are trouble. just like back then. History will repeat it self.

I lived in Ridgemead from 1972 until 1985 - it never occurred to me that the North end of Calne was rough (though now I think about it I NEVER strayed into Braemor Road if I could help it)
I drive past our old house occasionally, and that area does look awful until you get round the corner into Rochdale Avenue.
One thing that does hit me now is just how wide roads like Rochdale Avenue are - they are far more child friendly than the narrow streets they build now........

Thats cos the new houses they build are more like rabbit warrens.i lived at braemor for 4 years and not once did anything happen.we were though just into braemor..that had a very bad rep at one time due to key party.bad rep in calne at the moment seems to be dixson way,and colemans

why is it that negative comments proliferate, I have lived in Calne from the mid 50's. Initially in Bryans Close road and then in Lickhill road. Yes there have been some issues over the years but no more than other towns of a similar size.
Drugs, like it or not, are every where, families fight & argue and people drink to much.
I can walk from one end of the town (I do on occassions) to the other at midnight and not be concerned.
I am not saying nothing untowards happens but please put it into context, the vast majority of the residents of Calne are law abiding and don't every see any incidents of wrong doing or anti-social behaviour.

Every town seems to have its bad areas. These areas can be caused by just a couple of "events" being blown out of all proportions by gossip mongers. Take, for example, a pub which has a one off Friday night punch up and that pub will be labelled as a trouble spot or a rough pub.
I lived in Calne upto 1986 and to be honest there wasn't an area where you could honestly say was worse than another. I think tribalism may play a part in who is better than somebody else. As someone who went to Guthrie and Dunstan school we all thought we were better than someone who went to Preistley school - there was no proof just sheer prejudice.

Very true GTB, though i would say we "WERE" better than the kids at Priestly lol.
I guess this is the stuff that we have inherited from the past, tribal thinking and dominance, its something in our genes, our make up, though more in some than others.
Why the East coast - west coast thing in the U.S ?
Why Northerners and southerners here ?
Why Do the Scots hate the English (dont deny it) ?
Its all down to our genes, where we came from and who our ancesters were.
So I guess if you were born and raised in north Calne ..... You'll have feelings about The people of Colemans ....... or you did when you were Naieve and young !.
Hmnnn interesting , though still doesnt solve the hooligans in Calne.
Perhaps we should start the old town battles again Calne v's chippenham, that 'd give the some respect to where they live and want to make it the best place to be !!!!!!!!!

its not people in different parts of town who have problems with the people from other sides of Calne, its just a bunch of teenagers who go around looking for trouble to cause and then we all get the blame cus we are teenagers, they think we are all the same. even if there were more things to do in calne the usual trouble makers would still cause trouble because it what they do.

not all teenagers are bad some are very nice and if only people chat to thme you would findthat most are ok.
every day i take my dog along castle walk and there is loads of teenagers down there most are fine and are just enjoying the sunshine some i admit are there for drinking .but to be honest not had one problem with them.
the only people i seem to have a problem with are the ones in there 60s-70 down there .a couple in particular who own two dogs and they are both off the lead .one in particular is very nasty and will often bite the other dogswhat does the owner do ?just walk on he makes no attempt to control the dog.what so ever.he even tried to attack oz difference is oz can swim this dog dont like the deep end of the water however should the dog try and attack oz on land then the dog in question will get a size 8 boot straight up its a rse lets see them try to ignore that one
