Nasty dogs!

Is it now time to place the Rottweiler on the banned list after the latest case of them killing someone? I personally don't like this breed and can see no reason why anybody would want a dog like this in their house let alone around children. These things are supposed to be muzzled in public yet you very rarely see them with this device on. I would have no qualms of banning this breed - the ultimate chav/yob accessory!

not all of them are bad its like people .
the dog wasnt the mothers and the child was a outsider in a house.
as far as i know that dog had shown no sign of agresiion unlike the case of the pitbull what had shown a great deal of aggresion and killed that five year old.
if you start banning all those dogs then how about a staffi they have been known to attack and when they do they have lock jaw which would cause more considrable amount of damage.personaly i would never trust my child with a staffi but they are also known as being fantastic family pets .

GTB, i invite you around to my house to meet my rottie, he is 9 1/2 stone but thinks he's a lap dog! You will not find a better natured dog, its not the dog its the owners who need training. I never let my dogs in when my grandchildren are around. Also there is no law saying these dogs have to be muzzled, again its up to the owner. Any good dog owner will tell you they know when there dog is unhappy and will know how to handle the situation.
My daughters toy yorkie on the other hand, will attack anyone that tries to hurt my daughter, and he hates children, i dont think they do muzzles that small or maybe we should just ban all dogs...just in case!

I THINK DOGS ARE LIKE PEOPLE, THERES SOME GOOD PEOPLE AND BAD PEOPLE ,, all dogs should be supervised around children ,even the most docile dog can turn nasty .

I think people forget really that a dog is a wild animal no matter how tame it is.
now matter what the breeding is a dog is capable of turning .
i once knew a dog when i was younger was soft as hell and a lovely dog had no problems with him at all.
one day i was talking to my friend and the dog got out of the house i ran up a wall and the dog bit me.i had done nothing to the dog except to be on his terrortory.

What does that say about the mental state of your dogs? No offence meant, but if you can't trust your dogs with your own grandchildren what about a surprise visit to your house by a person with a small child?
kathy27

The reason i wont let my dogs around small children is because they have not been brought up with small children, they are big dogs and are clumsy rather than vicious. As for a surprise visit, your very welcome as the dogs have there own room and they are put there when we have visitors.
No offence taken, like ive said before dogs have alot of bad press, maybe the owners should take it for awhile! A responsible dog owner wouldn't put there dog in any situation they were not used to.

We have a terrier (Westie) who is as daft as a brush and very protective of my three children. Like you though, Kathy I wouldn't totally leave him in the room alone with them just in case they started to get a bit to boistrous with the dog and he snapped at them out of frustration.

The thing I have about the Rotty and other big dogs is the amount of power these dogs contain and the prospect of damage to a human being no matter what age is collossal.
kathy27

i completly agree, the rottie is one of the most powerful dogs, but as with all dogs they have to know who is top dog in there pack, thats me! they all judge my reactions to see how they should behave. I have worked very closely with a dog trainer, i know what my dogs could do but i know they would only do it now if they were provoked or someone tried to hurt me.
GTB

You sound a very responsible owner, Kathy. You must cringe when you see these hooded yobs walking down the road with a rottie not even on the lead - more like a ticking timebomb than a family dog.
kathy27

i never let my dogs off there leads, unless there is no one or nothing else around in a big field.
i know of someone who has just taken on an ex guard dog (a rottie) they have never had a dog before and have kids. an accident waiting to happen  Mad
GTB

I hope they know a good plastic surgeon or undertaker! Rolling Eyes
kathy27

i tried to give them the phone number of the trainer i use, but they think its going to be easy and dont want to waste money  Evil or Very Mad
Clunk

If i remember correctly, in the kennel club guidlines, the only restriction when it comes to muzzles is that all working dogs must have them. This includes, gundogs, sheepdogs and greyhounds. Especially greyhounds because they are trained to chase something small and fluffy like a kids coat. . . .  .
Local lass

never heard of that clunk especialy sheep dog.
there is a lady up the school who has a staffi off the lead he keeps close to her and only once have i ever seen the dog go at another dog.
it amazes me the amount of kids now who are absolutly petrified of dogs what dosnt help is the parents who encourage it.
there are to many dogs to be scared of them .whats needed is a respect for them.
kathy27

my nephew was attacked by a G/S guard dog when he was younger, he is now scared of any dog, his reactions have rubbed off onto his children, which is such a shame.
Bear

I have to say that this is an interesting thread however I will throw a spanner in the works which normally provokes pet loving Brits. I think the Koreans have the right attitude where a dog or cat for that matter is just a dinner waiting to shot. prepared. cooked and eaten. having viited the far east I can confirm that properly done a dog can provide a tasty meal for the family.
kathy27

Shocked  i think id rather starve than eat one of my dogs, they are part of my family and could no more eat them than one of my children, no theres a thought  Laughing
