Nancy Bryant

One of Calne's longest standing councillors (Town, District & County) has not been selected by her party at next years elections to the new Unitary Authority.
Given her record of working for the CALNE area community this was a big surprise to many.

The question is, will she  and should she stand as an Independant?
Chepfer

Peter, was it her own decision to stand down ?
Peter Dolman

No as I understand it she wanted to stand in the Unitary Authority elections next June but was basically told she was not required!

The selection process, one that I have been through myself for a different political party, involves an interview with party officers as well as a written application.

It would appear that Nancy's work over the years was not good enough. It must mean that the individual selected in her (Nancy's) place  must be a very "hot" prospect indeed.

It will be interesting to see the formal announcement on Nancy's successor.  (Unless you have the inside knowledge)  But surely He or she would need to be voted in after being selected.  Nothing is yet a done deal is it ?
Peter Dolman

Quite right, with Nancy's background her party must be concerned that if she stands as an independant that their official candidate will not be elected. Either because Nancy is elected or because she splits the vote to the benefit of a competitor.

Interesting times on the horizon!
Chepfer

Any news on a successor ?
Peter Dolman

its all very quiet which in its self is surprising.  we are likely to hear more in the new year.
Chepfer

So are the other conservative representitives safe ?

Tony T and co ?
Peter Dolman

I hear that Alan Hill will stand in Cherhill. This is a man who stood as an independant then as a Lib Dem before being successful as a Conservative in 2007.
Tony Trotman I understand will stand in Chilvester.
I will advise if I hear more but I am sure that all parties will be publishing full lists in the new year.

I understand that Cristine Crisp has been selected instead of Nancy. Christine has been elected at district and county council level before for the conservative party but not for Calne.

Both are very experienced campaigners and the selection process must have been diffilcult decision to make.

I also understand that it is highly likely that Nancy will stand as an independant against Cristine Crisp. This would be an interesting fight between 2 seasoned campaigners.

May the best woman win.
Chepfer

So where is christene crisp from, if she's never been elected for Calne before ??
Peter Dolman

Christine lives in Foxham and I believe has represented Calne Without and other outlying area's.

You can find more details by checking out the district council web site and councillors profiles.
Chepfer

Glad to see it's someone from calne then , representing calne ..grrrrrr.

I believe it should be someone from calne representing us.

It'd be like you Peter, representing Chippenham !.

Although Nancy is from Mile elm, she's in the town alot and knows whats happening here ........ seems i may be voting independant then this time !
Bear

Interestingly of all the names mentioned so far in this thread the only one I have ever heard of is Tony Trotman and then only because he runs a shop in town. I dont know what this says about me or the political system in Calne.
Peter Dolman

Bear I am surprised that you have not heard of Nancy Bryant as she has represented Calne far longer than anyone else.

In my experience the majority of voters take no interest in their local councillors until they are unhappy with something!
At election time liturature giving personal details of candidates is at best given a scant perusal but in general ends up in the bin unlooked at.
