Not true in any way.
I use a laptop all the time.
£300 from ebuyer gets one which will do everything.
Or spend £800 and get a macbook.
Or just bin the PC base unit and get a minimac
www.apple.com/uk
Apple are the way forward and are so simple to use.

Even these postage sized ones they give away free (on a contract) are quite good specification.

laptops are fine for browsing forums and the like, my son has a desktop that makes this laptop look like a childs calculator but he runs these superduper online games playing with people all over the world. he told me the graphics card alone cost him £250 pounds

I only have a laptop - its a 4 year old Toshiba.
Since, even before this machine was launched, laptops were offering similar speeds to desktop pc's.
With the latest cpu's such as Dual core and Dual Core due, you have more or less the same thing as in a desktop.
Some laptops are better than others - as with desktops. Those with a Celeron cpu are the slowest. Those with "shared graphics" have slower graphics speeds, while those with "graphics cards" offer the improved speed - with more graphics memory resulting in better performance than one with a lesser number.
The more RAM a computer has, the better. The greater the number, the more things it can do at once, without a slow down. 1Gb of RAM is the current minimum, with 2Gb being common place (a bit better), and 3Gb or even 4Gb being the best of all.
Have a look in places like Currys or Comet - nearly all the pc's are now laptops.
The only "problem" I have found is with wifi - and not just my pc. The works desktop pc has the same problem. Random connection slow downs (internet slows right down), and random connection failures (web page can not be displayed error). This can lead the pc to crash or freeze. The desktop at work would start copying files over wifi, then stop half way. After much research the problem appears to be a conflict with the Intel wifi chip in my laptop and the Orange wifi modem/router box. I guess the works desktop and router have the same combination. Although for some people, adjusting the cpu setting so it runs at full speed and never lets the wifi go into "sleep mode" may help, it didnt for me. I now use a long ethernet cable instead. No problems anymore.

2 types of internet -
the first is the regular home based system which works via your phone line (or Cable network if you live in Swindon). You can connect to this using a corded system such as a USB modem, or a more expensive network version which uses ethernet, and allows multiple pc's (or other "ethernet enabled" devices such as Playstation3) to connect to it at the same time. A further network option is wifi - wireless connection for multiple devices at home. The signal strength means once you go outside, or much beyond, the signal fades to zero.
The 2nd type is internet via the mobile phone network. You may have seen plug in usb dongles from 3 mobile and others. The coverage for this internet over mobile phone network, is the same as for a mobile phone. Make sure you can get 3 mobile signal where you live - not everyone can. Speed of this is more limited, to around a max of 2Mb. Some locations (dont think Calne has this) are broadcasting an improved 3 mobile service with a signal called HDSPA (or some thing like that) which offers speeds upto 6Mb. Actual speed maybe affected by signal fade etc - I dont know for sure.

I can get HSPDA with my mobile in Calne, it shows up as "3.5G" on the screen rather than "3G".

plug your mouse in then.
If your old mouse was "USB", just plug it in and it should work.
Also, if you have a USB keyboard, plug that in too and use your old monitor with it, as laptops are not very good for you ergonomically.
