LANTERN PARADE 2008Yes, the lantern parade is on for 2008! ! The scheduled date is 29th November to coincide with Calne Town Council's Christmas Lights switch on. You might think it's a bit early to be notifying you of the date, but if you or any of your family wish to take an ACTIVE part in this year's parade there is an open meeting in the Lansdowne Hotel @ 7:30 PM on the 8th October. All are welcome.
You will have an opportunity to learn how to make your own lantern or work on the larger scale projects. There will be free workshops, materials and help (if required) to make standard lanterns or to your own design.
Please come along show your support and meet the "Lantern Lady" and team and make the parade spectacular success. :thumbr:

Who's paying for the drinks in the Lansdowne on the 8 October?

You are if you come along. But you will be welcome. ( to buy me one if you wish.) 8)

That hardly represents a free or 'open' meeting really in a private hotel, unless the landlord/manager is happy for people to arrive and buy nothing, which would be unusual?

Suck it and see ! Do come along Geddi and bring a friend.

Excuse Geddi he just nit picks everything.
Keith, can anyone make one to go in the parade?
I would love to give it a go.
I watched it for the first time last year and was impressed with all the different designs.
There are some pictures on the forum of last years parade some where.

Keith
|
Absolutely,Top Dog. The more the merrier ! It costs nothing except a little of your time.
You make and carry your own.
Come along and see us. We'll be pleased to see you.

Will look forward to it.
For members who do want to go what materials would be handy to bring to help out?.
|
Keith
|
Appreciate what you are saying but all materials are Council Tax funded so you have already paid. Calne Area Initiative for an Active Community (CAIAC) is funded by the County and it tries to do what it says on the tin. Get People involved in enjoying the community and community activities.
See You There :thumbr: !

If Dad is interested, then 5 year old lads will be. 30 years ago I had two of them. (5 year old lads that is not Dads).
Respectfully suggest that Mum &/or Dad come along to the Lansdowne on the 8th Oct to see what it's all about and bring ALL children and young adults to a workshop to make one up from a supplied kit or design your own. See if you can bring along other Mums or Dads.
Good opportunity for a family to play together and meet other families and have some fun. Workshops will visit villages and bring kits. See your parish clerk.

Not really here. The lantern parade in Calne is amazingly astounding, and all should be well proud of it who live here. It was once managed in the Town hall and was free to all. The Lansdowne is a private enterprise which has generously offered the space to allow people to create lanterns, yet there is always a feeling that one should be buying a drink or something to contribute to the hotel. Not all can afford to, ergo - some are filtered.
Someone thought that the town hall was better used to generate cash-flow so stopped the use for making lanterns, even when the £1000 claimed to be lost in missed revenues was offered from at least one source. It was small minded, petty squabbles and, yes, nit-picking, which caused the loss. The £1000 (or even (£2000) remains on offer should the Town council deign to change their minds about the town hall. I can not imagine they will as they can not even resolve an issue about a flag flying without months of controversy.
Make a lantern - ALL. They are simplicity itself and are fabulous to behold.

The 8th of Oct is to raise awareness and interest in the whole project and to explain exactly what is entailed and how people can participate.
Maybe I should point out that regular worshops will be in the Grove Centre or any out of town location that people require. People can attend as many or as few workshops as they require. But there is an ongoing requirement to work on the larger structures which can take many hours of team work. Individuals put in as much time as they wish............... But I'm giving away the plot.
CAIAC is extremely grateful to Tim Howell and the staff of the Landsdowne Hotel for their continued, active support for ourselves and many other community groups within Calne.

The town hall can be available for this and other community projects. CAIAC can apply for a grant from the council for the hire of the town hall. This of course has to be actioned in advance.
Other groups apply and are granted awards of money or services and what better communuity project than the lantern parade.
Those applying do have to provide basic information about their organisation, such as their constitution and copies of their audited accounts.

I'm not sure what your point is here.
CAIAC has organised and planned this in the way that they have for good reasons. How it is achieved is of very little relevance. The overiding point is that the town and the people get the lantern parade at zero cost to the participants and much to the enjoyment of ALL.
Hope to see you on the 8th of October.

My understanding, from what I read about it last year, was that the Town Council was losing paying bookings by reserving space for the Lanterns. As any monies received from these bookings would be basically be used to benefit the town, it's just a judgement call on what you think's best for the town.
I think it's a bit unfair to label them as unhelpful, maybe you could argue that they should reprioritise things differently though.

I will be there Keith . Thanks for putting this on here, i really appreciate it !
I will be going to" the Grove" when it's on there .... which Co incidentaly as you'll know Geddi is owned by the town council now and has been offered to the group for this purpose !.

I was just explaining that the Town Hall is still available for use by community organisation free of charge. There is a strict procedure which applicants need to adher to.
The council in my experience are more than willing to help any organisation where possible.

Thank you for that. I'm sure it will be considered the next time CAIAC needs accomodation of that sort.

I am sure that there are people within CAIAC who are well aware of the availability of the town hall, if there are not then they should be!

Chepfer unless the County Council have recently transfered the ownership of the Grove to Calne Town Council I fear you may be wrong in your comment.
The Town Council some 2 years ago considered running the Grove after the County Council announced they were to close it. After carrying out a feasibility study (completed by Mark Wilkinson and very good it was) the Town Council refused to take it on.
Low and behold using the councils idea's the County Council decided not to shut it.
I am not aware of any change in that position, but I may be wrong.

is it Friday 28th?
Or Saturday 29th?
A leaflet we got from primary school (Mums the Word) says Friday 28th.
THis post says 29th.
THere is nothing on calne.org.uk
Please let people know ASAP, as there is a lot of local confusion.
|
rosco

It's Saturday 29th - not sure why the confusion as it's been always on a Saturday, certainly in recent years.
|
Peter Dolman

I am also not sure why there should be any confusion as Rosco points out its always on a Saturday and has been advertised as such. I think I remember seeing a great big banner outside the council offices, a poster in thwe library and on the 2 council notice boards in town.
I would also assume that the workshop organisor know what day its on and would be passing that on to anyone attending them.

Not sure where confusion has arisen but CAIAC is aiming at the 29th November in partnership with CTC Christmas lights switch on.

Keith

Have discovered where confusion arises. A certain town over the hill from Calne and beginning with the letter D holds its lantern parade on the 28th November. This is NOT Calne which IS on 29th.
Confusion cleared I hope. :thumbl:

Devizes copied our lantern parade after we had a couple of successful years, you cannot blame them. I think we can "blame" our deputy town clerk as she I understand was the town centre development officer for Devizes at the time.

I can tell you where the confusion arises.
As I said earlier, we have a leaflet called "Mum's the word" which we got from school I think and it is definitely in there as Friday 28th.
|
Keith

Regardless of "blame" the FACT is that CALNE's Lantern Parade is on the 29th November 2008 to co-incide with CTC Christmas light switch on.
Lantern workshops are operational seven days a week. NOW ! !
Pimpdriver, might be worthwhile 'having a word with your Mum'.
